Meet Silviana! Adapted from a vintage Greek textile a fellow stitcher shared with me at last year’s Pacific NW Stitch Summit, it features repeating cypress trees, geometric motifs, and this wonderful use of negative space that makes the design feel both restrained and complex at the same time. Stitched on 25ct evenweave, it finishes as a basket cloth or table square, a bit of folk embroidery you can enjoy every day.

The Santorini Floral is one of those designs that feels like a little escape to a Greek island when you're stitching! Colorful floral sprays, a graceful blue border, and a compelling diamond-in-square at the center make for a modern-day heirloom. And, the intricate center motif makes this very heirloom-worthy!

One of the things that never stops fascinating me about folk embroidery is how thoroughly it far-reaching it is. The same diamond motifs that appear in Greek island textiles show up in Romanian blouses, Bulgarian aprons, Serbian weavings. These intricate motifs were carried along trade routes, tucked into dowry chests, stitched by women who likely never met but were working from a shared visual language that stretched back thousands of years. When you stitch one of these patterns today, you're not just making something beautiful, you're participating in one of the longest-running creative conversations in human history!

I'm so excited to share Demetra with you today! This new kit is drawn from a fragment of a vintage Greek needlework pattern featuring motifs classic to Cretan textiles — diamonds, stars, and "chi", arranged in a vibrant border on a square cloth that works beautifully as a basket cloth or table square. It's a wonderful project for beginners, and for more experienced stitchers it's the kind of quick, rewarding make that's a delight. Stitched on 25ct evenweave and finished with an easy fringe finish. Also available as a PDF pattern!

A stitched table runner on a sideboard. A little basket cloth peeking out from under a fruit bowl. A finished piece framed and hung in a hallway you pass a dozen times a day. These are the ways that folk embroidery has been alive in our homes for centuries, and I love continuing these traditions of making textiles part of our everyday lives. Silviana is my newest basket cloth kit and it's a cheery stitch just in time for summer!

I designed my Mediterranean Sampler to be a little textile art history lesson in stitches😊 The cross, the star, the carnation, the scroll — four motifs that appear in woodcarving, stonework, painted borders, and textiles across the whole sweep of Mediterranean civilization, from antiquity through Byzantium and straight into modern folk embroidery --so you can stitch a bit of history, too!

There's something that happens when you bring hand embroidered textiles into your everyday spaces — the dinner table, the shelf by the window, the basket on the counter — and I love how everything softens, the room gets a little cozier, the colors cheer you as you walk by. This is such a big part of folk embroidery--that it's in active daily use, loved and shared😊
