Though I didn't get to meet Willa, it's evident what an incredible woman she was and that she is loved by her friends and family beyond measure. I'm honored that her daughter trusted me to share her story in her obituary, which was published in the Argus Leader and Watertown Public Opinion.

My condolences to the Hendrickson, Woodward and Austin families.

Frank Petereit was tempted to believe that he was the lost cause society told him he was - having grown up dirt poor during the Great Depression, raised by his widowed German immigrant mother and then shipped off to a delinquency school when he became too much to handle.

But then he met Iley - his future wife and partner of nearly 70 years now - who believed he was capable of more and encouraged him to become a doctor. He did that, becoming one of Sioux Falls’ first radiologists and achieving so much more over his lifetime.

Nothing was expected of a poor, deliquent boy. But Frank Petereit proved himself by becoming a doctor and living a fulfilling life — and he did it with the unwavering support of his wife and his Christian faith.

"About ten years ago we hired a journalist to interview my parents to create an audio archive of their lives and their stories. Four and seven years after losing my folks, this is one of my most prized possessions. There is nothing quite like being able to listen to your mother tell stories about raising you and meeting her grandchildren, nothing like hearing your father reminisce about his own mischievous childhood.

These recordings have been an absolute gift to me, and to our family. Long after so many of the physical “things” are gone. This is an anchor to the past, a point of reference as time continues to march forward."
