2026 for me is "outside" — Outside more - enjoying nature & walking my dog. Go outside of my comfort zone...hence why I started Obvs Handmade.

Thinking more outside the box - to be more creative & use the tools I have & gain more knowledge.

Another project from Obvs Handmade. I call this one a Mess Tray. The tray is a thick plastic measuring 18.5”x13.5” with a 1” lip.
What would you use a Mess Tray for you ask?? Plenty!
•Watercolor or Tempera Painting
•Slime
•Play-dough
•Kinetic Sand or Moon Sand
•Shaving Cream
•Pudding
•Really any sort of sensory play!
Sensory play helps kids develop skills in a fun, messy way all the while keeping the mess in a (sort of 😉) contained area. These trays can easily be rinsed off, wiped down/dried, and ready for the next adventure.

Hi! It’s been awhile since I’ve made a post so I thought I’d let you all see what I’m currently working on.
I’m notorious for buying fat quarters…I may not have a plan as to what I’m going to make with them but…I’ll use them someday. 🤷🏻‍♀️
I found the perfect book where I can build different blocks (either 12” or 6”) with the numerous fat quarters. I think this will be a very long process, which is just fine. Sometimes I find myself working on a particular project and get tired of it. This here will be my “let’s take a break and work on the farm quilt.”

Finished and hung! I have to admit…it’s not completely hung.😬 There is painters tape behind some of the wall hanging. I did create a dowel sleeve on the top but there were spots were it was flapping(?) away from the wall. I was done for the night with sewing since I was working on other things on my machine literally all day so for now there is painters tape.

🎉FINISHED!!🎉

The Simonsen Family quilt wall hanging is complete…well almost. I have to put a rod slip on the back & then figure out where in my home I’ll be hanging it.

I struggle with binding. YouTube helps but I’m more of a in-person learner. With this particular binding I decided to use the leftover fabric from the blues, red, & pink. I randomly did strips of 6-9” of each color & then did an ABCD color pattern (can you tell I work in a Pre-K classroom?).

🔄✂️WIP: Working on binding this afternoon. This is one part of quilting I really struggle with…send positive vibes my way please! 😬🪡

📣And a shoutout to Patchy Cat Quilting for the great long arm work. This is the 5th quilt PCQ has done for me and as alway I’m so happy with the results every time.

Another project which is actually brilliant (IMO)…a laundry basket with custom name and/or design to bring with you when shopping…especially Sam’s, Costco, Aldi, etc. My last shopping trip was much easier—place basket in cart. Fill basket. Check out. Place basket in vehicle. Drive home. Haul basket inside home.
My LL (lesson learned) on this one, use a solid colored vinyl for the smaller words. Mine says ‘Saving the planet one plastic bag at a time.’

Scrabble quilt top finished! Next up…the batting, backing, & off to be long-armed.
**My LL (lesson learned) if I were to make this again (perhaps for you) I would maybe do away with the numbers. Us Simonsens are not a Scrabble family but I liked the idea of it, so I went with it, to make it as close to a Scrabble board as possible.
It’s not perfect but that is one of the principles of Obvs Handmade…”there will be unintentional flaws.”

This will be a wall hanging somewhere in my home. Not sure where yet.

Personal family sign made for my nephew and his wife. I incorporated their initials into the corn stalk. A few months ago, my nephew reached out to me and asked if I could print out an E which is the initial of their first born. 💕

A handmade tree skirt makes a great bridal shower or wedding gift….or Christmas gift too. I received mine as a wedding gift (we got married in June) from my husband’s Godmother. It’s a great reminder every time we decorate for Christmas.
I made this tree skirt for my nephew and his wife for their wedding.
