Venice's most English name was born from a favor, not a great lord.

Behind Harry's Bar wasn't a rich man seeking fame, but Giuseppe Cipriani, bartender at the Hotel Europa, and a struggling American customer: Harry Pickering. The best-known story is that Cipriani lent him 10,000 lire to help him return to the United States, when those lire were a serious financial burden.

Two years later, Pickering returned and repaid the loan with heartfelt interest: enough money to help Cipriani open his own bar. Thus, in 1931, Harry's Bar was born, in a former rope warehouse on Calle Vallaresso.

The beautiful thing is that the place seems born for luxury, but in reality it started with a simple gesture: one person helps another, and then that debt becomes a sign. And inside that bar, Bellini and Carpaccio would also arrive. The rest is truly Venetian history.
