Have you ever heard the saying…….. sometimes you need to slow down to speed up……

Elizabeth and I this week did exactly that, we slammed on the brakes and pulled out of the fast lane for some unapologetic “US” time. Between my full time job, our full time real estate endeavor, and our full time beef operation….. we needed a time out.

To prove my point once again Jesus loves me, our romantic getaway got started early the night before! Now not the way some of you might be thinking after reading the previous sentence. I was setting outside our front gate at the farm in the car as it rained Wednesday evening. I had just drained and scrubbed the 1000 gallon water tank. I had the water on filling the tank back up. It takes roughly an hour and 45 minutes from start to finish. I was answering text and emails from work and making real estate calls. I looked up and I seen the steers making their way towards the corral for grain and water.

Remember the high headed steer that we attempted to tranquillized in order to catch him at the first of the month? Because he had been in the neighbors pasture for two months. Because he jumped the fence when I tried corralling him. Then after being inebriated by a couple darts decided to put a new opening in my fence line. Yeah, the one I somehow got a rope on, that drug me through my neighbors pasture like a top water jig. Yeah, that one……. Well here he came waltzing into the corral like a fat kid runs to cake. When he made his way to the back side of the feeder out of line of sight this 51 year old bald headed hillbilly slid out of the car like a cat burglar. I hopped the fence like a gold medal hurdler. I quietly sashayed to the gate like a ballroom dancer. I then slammed the gate like the cell door on the drunk tank on Saturday night!

Gluttony is a deadly sin. Him giving into temptation, peer pressure and the open feeder Wednesday night was causing him to repent Thursday morning. Elizabeth and I went to load him up in order to haul him to the stockyards. He was looking up to heaven for a way out or over, I don’t know which. He even dropped to his knees either begging for forgiveness or trying to crawl under, I wasn’t sure. It dawned on me before it was over he could be Catholic. Because he tried confessing to me with conviction. So much conviction I was forced to remove myself from eye level and perch myself on the top rail as he came by snorting and apparently talking in tongues. However, I’m not a priest or an interpreter so Elizabeth slammed the gate as he ran into the trailer and we passed him off like an offering plate.….. I AM WINNING!

Here is what I learned from that sinful bovine. Take every opportunity life provides to free yourself of unnecessary stress and anxiety. Walking around high headed and jumpy isn’t good for you or anyone around you. I believe God puts people and even animals in our lives to allow us to grow. I experienced substantial growth from this particular animal. Unfortunately my vocabulary grew every time I encountered him. I seen at least 3 layers of skin regrowth on my hands after the trip through the neighbors pasture on the end of a rope. My patience grew exponentially. Waiting for the right moment to utilize his weakness and shut a gate instead of using force proved the best option. A feed bucket has caught more outlaws than ropes ever thought about catching. That dumb steer should have utilized the creek and pond more during his stay here over the last 15 months. Because after only a two night stay in a Airbnb skinny dipping in the hot tub thinking about that steers departure and about how much Jesus loves me, I am totally stress free……….. Until Next Time

Some dirt roads in Oklahoma are toll roads………

When we closed on our place several years back I couldn’t wait to get started working on our vision. The very first day I stuck and buried the one ton up past its belly button and just shy of its ear lobes. I believe if you are going to do something, then at least do a good job of it. There I was stuck, 30 miles from the house, not knowing a single person in this new area who could help. Well the best way to meet your new neighbors is to knock on their door, introduce yourself and ask how big is their tractor. Being humble and in need of help on day one is a great way to start a relationship.

Well I met the young lady below that day. She was much smaller then. She was strapped in a car seat in her dad’s SXS. For some reason we hit it off and we have built quite the rapport. We have commissioned her and her older brother several times to water steers when we are out of town. They have come to our neighborhood to trick or treat a time or two and let’s just say we make sure they get more than just a few pieces of candy.

One day a couple years ago she started coming to the road to say hi as I was leaving the farm when she would hear me coming out of the bottoms. Sometimes it’s just to say hi. Others it’s to show me a snake she caught. Sometimes she beats me at arm wrestling out the side window of the truck. One day Elizabeth was with me at the farm. As we come up the hill there this lil gal was standing at the side of the road. We stopped and killed the truck and visited. As we drove off Elizabeth told me I needed to get some candy and leave it in the truck to give to this lil gal.

Several days later I get a call from Elizabeth mid day. She asked what I was doing? I told her I was getting my lil friend some candy like she told me to. Elizabeth asked what kind of candy did I get? I told her Bit-O- Honey and Chick-O-sticks. On the other end of the phone I heard Elizabeth say……my goodness James she is 5 not 50! Needless to say she weren’t much fan of my old people candy. Besides, neither tastes like they used to in the 70s and 80s.

Let me tell ya, now when I forget to stock up the truck with goodies I feel like a scab and quite the sup par neighbor. As I topped the hill yesterday, there she was standing on the side of the road waiting for me. The sun to the west of her casting her shadow. These days she’s almost as tall as her grandpa’s fence. She was waiting patiently with a big smile as I drove up and killed the truck. I felt guilty for eating the gummy bears I had bought for her so I gave her a whole bouquet of tootsie roll pops. As I drove off, she was skipping back towards her grandparents house I realized. We bought a farm on a toll road ………. Until Next Time

It’s mating season on the byways………..

If I had to guess he’s headed to the spidey h***y tonk to find him a big legged gal, sashay her around the dance floor eight stepping all night and after a few umbrella drinks persuade her into carrying his genetics into the future. Just proof fellas, no matter how ugly you are, timing is everything………Until Next Time

We run steers. We buy them around 800 lbs then we put roughly another 700lbs on them. Then they are harvested and we sell the beef to end consumers. Because of our business model we don’t see many babies around our place. Well last week while brush hogging I noticed I guess you could say our first newborn since we bought the place. Feel free to tell us we have an ugly baby……..Until Next Time

Do you keep spare washers around? You should……...

The house behind us sold last fall. A couple from Missouri bought the house and moved in. Nancy had had a restaurant in Springfield that she sold before they moved. We have enjoyed getting to know them and they have turned out to be great neighbors. Our lil mutt has a crush on their female Belgian Malinois. I don’t have the heart to tell Ranger that lil gal is out of his league. It’s like watching Danny DeVito trying to chase, impress and win over Cindy Crawford……….

Anyway, Nancy came over this weekend to borrow some washers for a project. Between my catch all box and a hidden box of washers I didn’t even know we owned we got her fixed up. Well tonight Elizabeth got a text from Nancy asking if we were home, she had something for us. Remember this lady owned a successful restaurant. She made us a batch of homemade cookies. These weren’t the average boring run of the mill chocolate chip cookies. They were pistachio, cranberry, lemon zest cookies with the consistency of pecan sandies. Every bite was exciting, different and tantalizing. The unmistakable pistachio flavor and sandie texture grabs your attention right from the start. Then the dried cranberries take over as you chew them up. Then out of no where the lemon zest earns the supporting actor award right as you send it down. Absolutely gourmet!! As I dipped the second or third into my milk it dawned on me it was like a pecan sandie and a fruit cake or Christmas cookie got together had a few too many, gave in to primal instincts and procreated perfection.

All I’m going to say is my next trip to the hardware store I’m going to buy some odds and ends just in case Nancy needs to borrow something in the future, I am WINNING!!……..Until Next Time
