There's nothing like catching that perfect glow in a photo. Here are our favorite tips for photographing your vintage glass collection at home:

☀️ Chase window light, not direct sun. Soft morning light from a north-facing window brings out the color without harsh glare.

🏺 Use a dark or neutral backdrop. A deep charcoal or cream wall lets ribbed, textured and cut glass really pop.

🌀 Get close and play with angles. Shooting slightly from above at a 45° angle catches that sparkle on the rims and edges.

💡 Don't forget the fun stuff. If you've got a uranium piece, pop on a UV light for that unmistakable neon glow.

🖼️ Add a little depth. Stack a few pieces at different heights with a stack of old books or a small riser : cleavage lines shadow beautifully.

There's a glass that looks plain white in the daylight : but catch it at the right angle and the edges glow a soft, peachy-apricot pink. That's opalescent glass, and once you start seeing it, you'll spot it everywhere. ✨

What makes it special?
It's made by adding bone ash and fluoride to the glass batch during production. When the piece is blown or pressed, those added minerals make the edges turn a creamy, milky white that lights up with a warm pinkish-apricot glow when the light hits just right.

How to tell it apart from milk glass:
- Milk glass is opaque all over. Opalescent glass is usually translucent in the center with those milky, glowing edges.
- Hold it up to sunlight : opalescent pieces let light pass through the body while the rims flare white-pink.

One of our favorite ways to style it: set an opalescent bowl or vase on a sunny windowsill. The natural light does all the work, turning a simple shelf into a little moment of magic.

Identifying quality vintage glass requires attention to detail.

Check for maker marks on the base of each piece. Fenton pieces often feature a logo or crest, while Fire-King and Anchor Hocking marks are typically embossed directly into the glass. Many high-value pieces from the early 20th century may be unmarked, requiring pattern recognition.

Examine the base for shelf wear. Authentic vintage glassware should show light, horizontal scuffing from decades of being moved on shelves. A base that is perfectly smooth on an older style may indicate a modern reproduction.

Inspect high-stress areas for damage. Run a finger carefully along the rims, handles, and base edges. Small chips, often called flea bites, are common but will reduce the market value. Check for internal fractures or cloudiness that cannot be washed away, often referred to as sick glass.

Carry a small UV blacklight to identify uranium glass. Items containing uranium will glow a vibrant neon green under the light. This was common in green and yellow glass produced between the 1880s and 1940s.

Familiarize yourself with sought-after patterns like jadeite, hobnail, and moonstone. These remain consistent sellers in the vintage market.
