As fall arrives in Maine, so do thoughts of holiday shopping at Archipelago. This is a bittersweet time for us as at the end of 2025, Archipelago will be closing. In 2026, Island Institute will begin transforming the first floor at 386 Main Street, Rockland into a new community engagement space where employees, partner organizations, and others will gather. We're proud to have connected you with so many wonderful, talented Maine artists through the years, around 1900!
In the 25 years since Archipelago first opened, the store has returned more than $5.5 million to its participating artists and makers. We are proud to have been part of the growth in Maine’s creative economy and a vital part of Rockland's Main Street.
We couldn't have made such an impact without you ~ our fans, customers, friends and neighbors. Thank you!
As we bring the retail store to a close, you'll find some of your favorite vendors in our sale collection. Shop early and often as things are moving fast! https://thearchipelago.net/collections/special-sale-items
Watch our social media for special sales, important dates and some memories.

We are so pleased to feature the textile art of Catherine Worthington -Artist in our gallery space. Catherine's pieces bring a strong sense of place using vibrant colors and details of Maine's coast through paint, fabric and texture. Sure to make your space special and evocative!

"My textile art consists of painting & surface design techniques that transform plain cloth into a unique palette of fabrics to create with. Inspired by the natural world I am compelled to create and capture its color, texture and charm. My textile art quilts are interpretations of real places and I hope to capture the attention of the viewer by creating a feeling or familiar place to connect with."

Catherine’s Brunswick-based studio practice consists of painting cloth and composing art quilts as well as designing and creating textiles, including botanical printing.

🦪 Today, we're celebrating National Oyster Day! This bivalve thrives in Maine's cold waters. Oyster farming, like other kinds of shellfish and seaweed aquaculture, offers a variety of benefits to the ocean and to our state's working communities. Shellfish harvests help to meet food demand, increase biodiversity on farms, and help fishermen to diversify their catch.

Maine Oysters inspire chefs, artists, designers, jewelers and through their nuanced flavors enrich our palates, plates, dining experiences, and summer evenings.

In recognition of this day, our Oyster Collection is 25% off online through August 15th so shop early for the best selection, including hand-carved wooden oyster platters and bowls by Paul Sampson at Oyster River Joinery, oyster kitchen towels and felted ornaments.

Stop by the gallery on Friday, August 1st from 5–7 PM to celebrate Poetry of Place, Encaustics by Helene Farrar Art ! Join us to meet the artist and enjoy good conversation and treats. Don't miss this one! The show is on view through September 23.

Encaustic painting is an ancient painting technique developed in Egypt which combines beeswax, damar resin and pigments to give it color. Hélène Farrar is a Maine-based American artist who works primarily in the ancient medium of encaustic. Her colorful paintings draw themes from the natural world and her observations of it, and they have a depth and luminousness achieved through careful attention to texture and surface quality. She considers her work part of a conversation about humanity, beauty, and nature.

New in the gallery! Come in and see Poetry of Place, showcasing works by Helene Farrar Art which just opened in our gallery space and is on view through August 31. Don't forget to join us for an artist's reception from 5–7 PM on August 1 to enjoy good food and conversation.

“These paintings represent part of a year's work devoted to exploring the landscape surrounding and reaching beyond Manchester and Rockland, Maine.” Of her work Helene says: “Drawing from my memory, printed resources and studio process, I engaged with place as a structure to play, to scrape, reapply, draw into and splatter the ancient of encaustic (hot, beeswax paint). These places are known to me intimately as I walked, sat with and lingered in them repeatedly. My hope is that you can 'sit with' these paintings yourself and find them as a means to meditate.”

Her colorful paintings draw themes from the natural world and her observations of it, and they have a depth and luminousness achieved through careful attention to texture and surface quality. She considers her work part of a conversation about humanity, beauty, and nature.

She recently relocated to Rockland, Maine with her husband, college-heading daughter, and a sassy cat. She has a studio in Tenants Harbor, Maine with an ever-evolving ocean view.
