These ceramic earspools are formed from hand-dug clay gathered on ancestral Caddo land in so-called Texas, connecting them to both land and history. Before shaping them, I studied archaeological accounts of ancient Caddo earspools, which were worn in a variety of styles and with a variety of etched or embossed designs. Guided by photographs and illustrations of these historic pieces, I created a present-day continuation of Caddo earspool traditions.
After being shaped and allowed to dry, I burnished each earspool with a smooth stone, giving it a polished sheen. I then fired them in an open ground fire. I etched a basket-weave motif, commonly found in ancient Caddo art, onto the surface after the piece was fired.
