There are things people start doing because they have to, and then there are things they keep doing long after they don’t.

Paul’s Special Relish is one of those things.

Paul’s Place in Rocky Point has been putting it on hot dogs for generations. It looks a little like chili. Eats a little like chili. But there’s no meat in it.

That wasn’t originally somebody being clever.

Paul’s goes back to a time when money was tight, meat wasn’t always easy to come by, and later there were years when meat was rationed. Folks learned to stretch things. They learned to substitute. Mostly they learned that supper was still expected to happen regardless of what was available.

Somewhere in all that came Paul’s Special Relish.

The remarkable part is what happened afterward.

Things got better. Meat became plentiful again. Nobody was stopping Paul’s from putting hamburger in the pot.

They didn’t.

Because by then people didn’t want the substitute anymore.

They wanted Paul’s Special Relish.

And I think there’s something wonderfully Southern about accidentally creating a tradition while trying to get through hard times. What one generation ate because they had to, the next generation grew up craving.

Now we drive to Rocky Point and order it on purpose.

Which may be about the highest compliment a struggle meal can ever receive.
