Happy Juneteenth!

"Opal Lee is an American retired teacher, counselor, and activist in the movement to make Juneteenth a federally recognized holiday. She is often described as the "grandmother of Juneteenth". On June 17, 2021, President Joe Biden signed Senate Bill S. 475, making Juneteenth the eleventh federal holiday."

I celebrated New Years Eve 2016 in Provincetown and that March, as I neared fifty, I thought "if not now when" and purchased a commercial space in Provincetown. It is hard to believe that today marks the 10th anniversary of launching Adam's Nest. Thank you to everyone who has supported this small q***r business that has enabled me to spend my summers and earn a living and be in community in this magical town.

As we approach our 10th Anniversary this Friday, we've brought back a few of the first season's graphics. What a difference a decade makes.

As part of our 2026 Pride Month series, we spoke with novelist and AIDS historian Sarah Schulman. In her nearly seven decades in the city, the novelist, playwright, and filmmaker has co-founded the D**e March, reported on the HIV/AIDS epidemic, drawn pedagogy from Audre Lorde, and written many novels that focus on le***an characters.

In their conversation, Schulman and Hyperallergic’s associate editor, Lakshmi Rivera Amin, discussed the origins of her interest in writing, the publishing industry’s resistance to le***an protagonists, and the next generation of authors and activists who give her hope for the future.
