Episode 15: New Hire 🐾

Management brought in an intern.

His name is Kevin.

Training Day 1 results:

✅ Attitude: Excellent
✅ Initiative: Excellent
❌ Accuracy: Questionable

When asked to retrieve a tennis ball, Kevin proudly returned with a shop pencil.

Results were mediocre.

But encouraging.

Meridian is getting ready for its forever home.

As much as I enjoy the building process, one of my favorite moments is the handoff. Seeing someone's reaction when they first see their piece in person makes every hour in the shop worth it.

It's even better watching them load it up and head home knowing it's about to become part of their everyday life.

Management requested a game of fetch.

I immediately initiated inventory control procedures.

After a thorough audit, I discovered:
• 17 tennis balls
• 9 toys
• 4 Greenies
• 1 tape measure
• Several items currently under investigation

All company assets have now been relocated to a centralized storage facility.

The Northstar build finally made it through inspection.

For approximately six seconds.

After that, management informed me the table had been reassigned to the dog division.

Apparently it would look great beside a dog bed.

And also...

I don't have seven routers...

One week of milling, fitting parts, layout changes, and a whole lot of sawdust.

Projects always look questionable right before they come together.

At some point you just stop buying normal things 😂

Started as one of those “this should be quick” projects and somehow turned into maple, walnut, custom details, and way more hours than a toilet paper holder had any right to require.

Built from scratch from rough stock to finished piece.

I thought we were making progress in the shop today...

Apparently I had committed a serious HR violation.

Missed lunch.
Skipped walk break.
Supervisor intervention was immediate.

Northstar build status: on track.
Shop Supervisor status: fully fueled.

Walked into the shop with a brand new project idea.

Shop Supervisor requested a review of unfinished builds, cleanup status, photos, and several open investigations.

I’ll be honest... the boss isn't always wrong.

Sometimes it's less about starting something new and more about closing a few loops first.

Still got denied though.
