Many of you know I’m a 6th grade engineer turned math teacher that has been in the classroom for 12 years. A few years ago, some fabulous teacher friends and I wrote a series of math books for kids to practice math over the summer. We just didn’t like what we saw in stores.
We wanted it to be easy to use, reviewed all grade level content, and kept daily work short so that kids would be more inspired to come back for more the next day. After years of tutoring, I knew there had to be a way to share my teacher knowledge with all of my parent friends to empower them as well!

3️⃣Three different kids, three different math encounters this weekend…

👦🏼The youngest was attempting some legos. Counting the dots to make sure he had the right piece was a perfect challenge not to mention the spatial awareness practice

👦🏼The middle was making a model of Rio de Janeiro’s Metropolitan Cathedral for fourth grade. His class got to vote on a city, and each kid got to pick their own building in that city to make a model of.

👧🏼The oldest was talking Stanleys and with that we talked about difference sizes and ounces that they hold. I asked her “how many ounces in a can of pop?” “How many ounces do you think your Stanley holds?” “What are other ways to measure liquid?”

Most parents think that their kids have mastered negative numbers even before they have begun!
Students might know what a negative number means and where they have seen it before (temperatures, banking, games, stock markets, sea level)... THAT IS GREAT.
In sixth grade we make sure they get a good introduction AND plot these numbers on a number line - including decimals and fractions.
