For over 4 decades, I knew very little about my Grandfather (William H. McLean) serving in the Korean War. While visiting in 2011, my Grandmother mentioned that she saw his medals in the spare bedroom closet. I asked him to show them to me.

In the spare bedroom, he reached to the bottom corner of the closet and pulled out a shoe box. In the shoe box, he removed a crumpled up brown paper bag and removed several patches and medals, including two (2) Purple Heart Medals and a Silver Star Medal.

Let that visual sink-in...a Silver Star (Korea) and two Purple Heart Medals (Korea & WWII - Iwo Jima) stored in a brown paper bag. It was unacceptable, awful, sad and wrong.

In just a few weeks, I was able to craft a customized medal case (pictured here) and gave it to him with the medals fully mounted. Until that moment, I had never seen my Grandfather come close to crying. He showed the medal case to everyone that knocked on his front door and he proudly stated that his grandson made it for him. He was able to visit the War Memorial before he passed away in 2014.

My Grandfather is My Hero. It was because of him that I have launched FOR OUR HEROES to do my best to recognize the many Heroes in the United States.
