A Children's Place Bookstore

A Children's Place Bookstore Portland's oldest independent children's bookstore! Raising readers for over 50 years. We have many parents who remember coming in when they were kids!

About Us
We opened our doors to Portland families in 1974 and have been helping to raise readers ever since! A Children’s Place has been through many changes over the past decades: expansions, contractions, and relocations, but we've still got the same passion and community mindset as when Lynn Kelly and Jan Bruton started up in a small store front on Broadway fifty years ago. Since the time that

Lynn and Jan opened A Children's Place, the store has been through several owners. In 2024, Kira and Ariel became the next generation of caretakers. Both born and raised in Portland, Ariel and Kira have long histories with the store and each other. Friends since high school, Kira started working at A Children’s Place right out of college, and Ariel joined a few years later. Now, as parents with young readers themselves, Kira and Ariel (and their families) are thrilled to keep this Portland treasure alive and committed to raising readers for another fifty years! Throughout the years, we have always been motivated to inspire a love of reading while building community and creating enduring connections.

Calling all students and families of The Madeleine School!

Your Spring Book Fair is just around the corner! Only a little over a week away: Monday, June 1st through Thursday, June 4th.

This year, your local bookstore A Children’s Place is hosting it. And we have so many books ready to go. Books for all reading levels, more books, graphic novels, activity books and kits, stickers, stuffies, and more!

You will be able to preview the book fair during your regular Library period, and if you are a 5th-8th grade student, you will also be able to make purchase during Library.

Everyone (including parents and families) will be able to buy the exciting things you picked out in your head during Library each day after school. To make things simpler, all purchases will need to be made with a card, not cash. Families can also pre-load a Digital Wallet for their 5th-8th graders to use during Library.

Go to: achildrensplacebookstore.com/bookfair

for more details, and to see the preview videos we will post. That is also where the Digital Wallets can be loaded. This video is just a small sampling of what we are bringing, and we will have a longer one next weekend after we unpack everything at your school!

We had a sticky situation at story time today!

And that’s because it was a bring-your-stick-to-story-time-and-music kind of day!

Today’s theme was all about sticks, so our fantastic crowd of regulars brought in some of their favorite sticks, and we shared some of our favorite stick books.

Stories and music, every friday at 10:30.
