Did you know that with each purchase, you take a little Port Townsend home with you? The seemingly abstract pattern on the back of our tags is actually an image I took in the early days of KALMA of the blooming rhododendrons at my favorite local park, Chetzemoka.

Of course, it would be completely unreasonable to expect someone would notice this little detail but in a world increasingly saturated with AI-nonsense, I think we’re losing also the expectation that most things are made with care, let alone made at all. These tags I designed myself, after teaching myself Photoshop. I drew our logo with pen, hand, and ink. I took this photo in my favorite park. I hand label and tag each item. Each one is a little piece of Port Townsend, and a little piece of me.

We will always center hand-makers, creatives and anyone with an imagination and the stubbornness required to learn something new. We will continue to eschew Generative AI and the ways it makes our world uglier, emptier, and more barren. We will continue to do all things—even mundane things, like make price tags—with care. 🌸

There are a handful of misconceptions that often walk through the door—mostly that we are some kind of occult or oddities shop, or that we provide psychic or spiritual services. We describe KALMA as a secular space which includes spiritual people, and I often describe myself as “aggressively terrestrial.” Spirituality is an important part of how we cope with mortality and grief, but in a world where I talk to at least one practicing shaman a week, we’re here to be the rare folks who will help you with the paperwork. That doesn’t mean we’re all tight pants and button-ups; it turns out that deathwork and an immersive community care practice is actually pretty life-affirming. Come see us in Port Townsend, WA or check out our online shop and resources anytime 🖤 www.shopkalma.com

It’s a new month, and that means Disability Dialogue is just around the corner. Join us for our first Wednesday of the month peer support and social group for chronically ill and disabled folks. We’ll be gathering in our new location at 821 Washington from 5:30-7:00 on May 6th—we’ll see you there!

Last month, we talked about the ways that living in disabled bodies requires more interdependence. This can be a beautiful lesson in community building AND it can leave us disproportionately vulnerable when our community relationships are disrupted.

What happens when losing a relationship means losing your housing, too? Or your ability to get to doctor’s appointments? social gatherings? So much of how we navigate the grief and struggle of surviving under ableist systems and infrastructure is through the resilience and joy of our relationships. It reminds us that building truly interdependent communities requires building conflict resolution skills for navigating rupture and repair, and ensuring that everyone survives the process.

What will we talk about next time? I can’t wait to find out.
