On this day of gratitude, a quick remembrance: the earliest recorded “Thanksgiving” on these shores began not at a banquet table, but at an altar. On September 8, 1565—Feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary—Spanish settlers landed at what is now St. Augustine, Florida. They celebrated a Mass of thanksgiving, then shared a meal with the local Seloy (Timucua) people. It was the first communal act of religion and thanksgiving in the first permanent European settlement in North America, 56 years before Plymouth’s 1621 harvest feast.

Thanksgiving, then, is not only a day on the calendar. In the Eucharist (“thanksgiving," from the Greek eucharistia) we are drawn into communion with God and with one another. The Catechism of the Catholic Church 1323 names the Eucharist "a sacrament of love, a sign of unity, a bond of charity, a Paschal banquet..."

As we gather with family and friends, may our gratitude be more than sentiment. May it become a way of living: reconciled, attentive to the least, and anchored in the Lord through communion and prayer with the intent to make every day holy.

For all the saints who from their labors rest

Today we celebrate all those who’ve gone before us in faith — the known and the unknown, the great and the humble — who now share in the light of God’s presence. Their lives remind us that holiness is possible in every season and circumstance if your heart open to grace.

I began this All Saints’ Day at one of my favorite places, St. Anthony’s Chapel in Pittsburgh, surrounded by the relics of so many holy men and women. It’s a powerful reminder that the saints aren’t distant figures from history — they’re companions on our journey, interceding for us and inspiring us to live with courage and love.

May we follow their example with joy and trust, walking each day a little closer to the Lord.
