Halite on Sylvite
PCA Mine, Carlsbad Potash Mining District,
Eddy County, New Mexico, USA
15.25 cm wide x 12.7 cm tall

A vivid, transparent-to-translucent cobalt-blue halite cube rises prominently from a massive white sylvite host. The crystal displays the characteristic cubic habit of halite, with sharp edges, smooth faces, and a rich saturated blue coloration with hints of purple that intensifies toward the center of the crystal. The blue crystal is partially embedded in the matrix, creating a dramatic color contrast against the snowy-white, blocky matrix. A classic and highly desirable New Mexico evaporite specimen displaying the uncommon blue coloration for which the locality is renowned.

The specimen has excellent balance and display quality, with the blue crystal standing upright like a geometric sculpture emerging from the white matrix. The intense blue color is particularly noteworthy, as blue halite is relatively uncommon and highly sought after by collectors. In New Mexico specimens, this coloration is often attributed to natural radiation-induced color centers within the crystal lattice.

This specimen was mined in 2013 and is considered among the finest ever discovered.

Chrysocolla after Azurite with Malachite coated with druzy Quartz
Tenke-Fungurume area, Kolwezi mining dist, Lualaba, DR Congo

Available

A highly aesthetic cabinet specimen with vibrant turquoise-blue chrysocolla stalactites extending upward and outward in various directions. These formations have a smooth, almost velvety texture, contrasting with clusters of rich green malachite spheres that emerge from several points on the tips of the stalactites. The entire specimen is coated with clear drusy quartz.

This piece was found a few years ago in a small pocket filled with similar examples except that most did not have the qualities seen here:

Strong color saturation.
Excellent contrast between the bright turquoise chrysocolla and the dark green malachite.
Distinct crystal habits occurring together on a single piece.
Exceptional three-dimensional architecture.
Brilliant sparkling quartz.
Outstanding display quality.

One of the most compelling aspects is the juxtaposition of textures. The chrysocolla formations appear fluid, as though molten material has solidified mid-flow. In contrast, the dark spherical malachite clusters possess a granular, velvety texture, resembling moss, or dense star clusters. This tension between smooth and rough surfaces generates visual richness and depth. The specimen succeeds because it transforms a mineral into something that feels alive, architectural, and otherworldly all at once.

Rubellite Tourmaline on Quartz
Malkhan Pegmatite Field, Krasnyi Chikoy,
Zabaykalsky Krai, Russia
25cm tall X 22.3cm wide

Two elongated tourmaline crystals explode from milky white quartz crystals. The long tourmaline crystals possess a deep cranberry color placing them with the best of the rubellite family. This specimen possesses a dynamic bold form using both color and texture to express the best of this locality.

According to The Mineralogical Record, “Malkhan has produced some of the largest and finest specimens of colored tourmaline, especially rubellite, in the world, rivaling discoveries from Brazil, California, Madagascar, and Afghanistan”.

This discovery of rubellite tourmaline in a remote and mountainous area of Russia, about 100 km north of the Mongolian border, forever altered our perception of the species. Tourmaline had been known from this region for well over 100 years, but it wasn’t until the 1980s that mining in the region became of great interest. However, internationally, mineral collectors were unfamiliar with these important rubellite tourmalines. By 2015, a few magnificent examples appeared. These were quickly absorbed into collections around the world and recognized as being among the world’s finest tourmalines.
