July is Disability Pride Month! Join me in reading this month's book pick by a Disabled author and support a Disabled-owned small business. I plan to ship Books/Gifts by June 20th so they arrive to you by July 1st for us to read together.

ABOUT THE BOOK:
The latest poetry collection by the award-winning author of Tonguebreaker, Care Work, and The Future Is Disabled

Lambda Awardโ€“winning poet, memoirist, and disability justice movement worker Leah Lakshmi Piepzna-Samarasinha returns with their long-awaited fifth collection of poems, written over five years of pandemic lockdown, during which time they lost cherished friends and comrades and met their estranged parents' end of life.

The Way Disabled People Love Each Other is a fierce crip reckoning with all the ways disabled people love each other, in all our complexity. A book that will speak to any kind of griever, but particularly disabled QTBIPOC ones sitting with the endless mass grief and possibility of this time, and those with violent family from whom we still yearn to claw out beauty from the trauma rubble. It's a road map for survivors looking for something that's neither a happy Hollywood ending nor a transformative justice fairy taleโ€”not the healing we wished for, but the healing we find anyway.

This collection is a rigorous, rueful documentation of a specific time of pandemic fascist grief and possibility. Brimming with odes, elegies, and mourning songs, these poems sparkle like switchblades and offer new possibilities for love, grief, and memory.

๐ŸŒŸ ๐ŸŒŸ ๐ŸŒŸ ๐ŸŒŸ ๐ŸŒŸ 5 star review from Suzan Cohen: This was a great read

This was a great read. The characters were fascinating and complex and the story was intriguing and kept me guessing until the very end. I also learned so much about the culture of Grenada. This is a great choice for anyone who like a good mystery novel.

โœจYoung Reader/Chapter Book Recommendations โœจ

The fourth book in the Amina Banana series by Shifa Saltagi Safadi (or Triple S as I affectionately think of her) came out last week on May 12th!

I love that this series exists because the industry, society, classrooms, and libraries need more young reader/chapter books centering Muslim children.

Amina is a new arrival from Syria and as she tries to adjust to a new home, culture, and make friends, she also tries to find solutions to different problems.

In Book 1, Formula for Friendship, readers are introduced to her story as she tries to make friends at her new school.

In Book 2, Formula for Winning, she's trying to win a Spelling Bee even though English is still a challenge for her.

In Book 3, Formula for Money, she's trying to raise money to help her family's business.

And in Book 4, Formula for Fairness, she's learning how to work with someone she doesn't get along with for the science fair!

All super relatable and age appropriate for grades 2-3. Can stretch to first or 4th grade based on reading levels.

Anyway, checkout this book series! ๐Ÿ’œ

Currently Reading Tuma's Books May BOTM: A Splintering by Dur e Aziz Amma

๐Ÿ˜ณ Man, the narrator Tara is not very likeable but it's also very fascinating to me being inside her mind. She has the meanest thoughts and is so focused on having a "better life" that she sh*ts all over her past and current life, as well as everyone in it (except her kids, who she genuinely loves surprisingly because she was NOT giving off maternal instincts at all). But I'm having a blast reading this! Maybe because it's same really as watching reality TV shows. You know it's chaotic as hell and you're judging HARD, but something about it keeps you watching and entertained.

We're so fully in Tara's perspective that 43% into the book and I'm starting to be on her side ๐Ÿ˜…. I wonder how different this story would be if we got her husband or family's perspective.

I'm also enjoying learning a bit about Pakistan's history. Not in detail because we're in Tara's mind and she don't care about anything that doesn't impact her directly lol but I definitely plan to research later.

Anyway, this book is a fun read and I'm looking forward to seeing where it takes me next.

๐Ÿ’ญ If you've read this or are reading with me, I'd love to know your thoughts.
