Nwoko’s Political Shift: What It Means for 2027

By Emmanuel Enebeli

Senator Ned Nwoko’s anticipated defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) signals a significant shift in Delta State's political landscape and poses critical questions about the balance of power heading into the 2027 elections. This development highlights the dissatisfaction within the PDP and the strategic maneuvering by the APC to consolidate its influence in the South-South region. The defection, while still in its consultative phase, has already sparked intense debate on its implications for both Senator Nwoko’s political career and the broader political dynamics in Delta state.

One of the most notable aspects of this move is the light it sheds on the internal crises within the PDP. Senator Nwoko's displeasure with the PDP, according to him, stems from factionalisation of the party, lack of internal democracy and the party congress bears proof to that. There is no transparency in governance and there is no accountable use of resources.

There is no trace of modeling representational democracy which ensures balance of power which is the objective of having the three arms of government. His grievances, including the failure to fund critical projects like the Okpai IPP stepdown and the Ogwashi-Uku Dam, reflect a broader discontent that could weaken the PDP’s grassroots support in Delta North, a region historically vital to its electoral successes.

For the APC, his defection represents an opportunity to capitalize on the disarray within the PDP. The APC’s internal divisions in Delta State have long been a hindrance to its competitiveness. However, the inclusion of a high-profile figure like Nwoko, with his grassroots appeal and developmental agenda, could serve as a unifying force. His entry might encourage the various factions within the APC to close ranks and work towards a common goal, particularly in the Delta North Senatorial District, where his influence is strongest.

From a strategic standpoint, Nwoko’s move could redefine the 2027 electoral dynamics in Delta State. Despite the PDP's dominance in the state, the 2023 elections revealed vulnerabilities, as evidenced by former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa's poor showing in the Delta North LGAs during the presidential election. This underperformance, contrasted with Nwoko’s ability to secure his senatorial victory under the same conditions, underscores his unique appeal and the potential for an upset if he aligns with the APC.

Furthermore, his planned defection raises critical questions about federal attention to Delta North. By joining the ruling party, he positions himself to advocate more effectively for federal support on issues like electricity and water infrastructure. His consultative approach and pragmatic stance on development could attract federal investment to the area, addressing long-standing grievances of marginalization and fostering socio-economic growth.

For the PDP, Nwoko’s departure would be a significant blow, particularly as he is the only PDP senator from Delta State. Losing such a prominent figure could further erode the party’s credibility and weaken its organizational structure in the state. To mitigate this, the PDP must address internal grievances and rebuild trust among its stakeholders, particularly in Delta North, where dissatisfaction with the state government’s performance is palpable.

In Delta North, his defection could reinvigorate the APC’s fortunes, potentially transforming the district into a battleground for the 2027 elections. His emphasis on infrastructure development and his ability to connect with constituents on pressing issues give him a distinct advantage. This shift could also challenge the PDP’s dominance in other parts of Delta State, as political allegiances begin to realign in anticipation of the elections.

Finally, Nwoko’s defection is a reminder of the evolving nature of Nigerian politics. As he consults with his constituents and prepares for the next phase of his political journey, his move underscores the importance of performance and accountability in securing public trust. For those writing off Senator Ned Nwoko in 2027, the dynamics of his defection and his track record suggest otherwise. Facts are indeed sacred, and the coming years will reveal the full impact of this strategic decision.

Senator Nwoko Attends President Mahama’s Inauguration, Applauds Ghana’s Peaceful Transition

Senator Ned Munir Nwoko, representing Delta North in the National Assembly, was among dignitaries who witnessed the inauguration of John Dramani Mahama as President of the Republic of Ghana, on Tuesday, January 7, in the country’s capital city, Accra.

Responding to journalists at the event, Senator Nwoko praised the smooth transition of power, describing it as a lesson for the rest of West Africa, particularly Nigeria.

“It’s something we have to imbibe,” Senator Nwoko said. “When you lose, you accept the results. That’s the discipline we need to grow our democracy. Elections shouldn’t be a do-or-die affair. When there is a free and fair election, people should accept the outcome.”

The Senator lamented the tendency of some politicians to challenge election results not out of genuine grievance, but to manipulate the judicial process.

“The reason many go to court after they lose is because they believe they can influence the process—confuse or even induce the system. But if we emulate what is happening here in Ghana and in places like America, we can cultivate a culture of free and fair elections,” he explained.

Senator Nwoko stressed that patriotic contestants who prioritize the nation above personal or party interests are critical for strengthening democracy. “It’s not about the individual or the party; it’s about the nation. That mindset is what we need to adopt,” he added.

Expressing admiration for Ghana’s democratic progress, Senator Nwoko congratulated the people and leadership of the country.

“I wholeheartedly congratulate them. That’s why I’m here with my family—to show support and solidarity. What they have done is remarkable, and we on the other side of West Africa must emulate it. Ghana may be the younger brother, but they’ve shown us what’s possible,” he said.

Senator Nwoko and a galaxy of awards

By Fred Odu

Senator Nwoko's fight for reparation of injustice to Africa

By Julius Oweh

At the zenith of colonial exploitation of Africa, a British scholar dripping with arrogance and false sense of racial superiority said that a great nation is known by the colonies she acquired. Irked by the statement, Vladimir Lenin, a leading communist light replied that colonialism was the highest and worst form of capitalism. The European nations believed that Africa could be balkanized in their spheres of influence at the Berlin conference.

Apart from exploiting the resources of Africa, there was outright stealing of artifacts and gold in Africa. Some of such art works are still domiciled in European museums. The British expedition to Benin kingdom not only led to the sack of the Oba, invaluable works of arts were carted away.

Some Nigerian historians maintain that the level of poverty in the continent could be traced to the pillaging of Africa by the marauding invaders. MKO Abiola, the flamboyant politician and philanthropist, the winner of the 1993 annulled presidential election was in the forefront for reparations and compensation to Africa by the European nations.

Today, a senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria is in the forefront in the campaign for reparations and repatriations to Africa. Senator Ned Nwoko as the chairman of the Senate committee on reparations and repatriations is scout ready to fight so that the injustice of the past years to Africa can be corrected.

Recently the committee met in Abuja and these are some of the terms of reference. That it has been saddled with a significant mandate, including investigating historical wrongs done to communities and individuals across Nigeria and recommending appropriate reparations.

Another mandate is the repatriation of cultural artifacts that were stolen from Nigeria and are currently held in foreign countries.

Speaking at the meeting of the committee, Senator Nwoko expressed confidence in the members of the committee, adding that with their wealth of experience, the committee would succeed.

Listen to the distinguished senator: 'There is no doubt in my mind therefore that the committee will deliver on its core mandates with significance and high level of success.

"It is on this note that I seek your unhindered cooperation and understanding as we navigate the water of this very important committee.'

Nwoko further explained that when necessary, the committee would pursue legal redress through international courts to ensure that justice is served.
For the senator representing Delta North, as an international lawyer of repute, he is in his elements as regards
international law practice.

He also maintained that his committee shall not be a solo effort. That the committee would collaborate with traditional rulers, civil society organizations, and international partners, including the United Nations and the African Union.

This is a tall order and that the European nations would not gladly agree to the demands for reparations. Unlike MKO Abiola campaign of reparations, Senator Nwoko's committee has the support of the federal government.

It is now left for the government of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to seek the support and understanding of the African Union so that those who exploited Africa and stole her artifacts should not only pay reparations and repatriations, an apology should be extracted from them.

This is what Ned Nwoko and his senate committee want to achieve for Nigerians and indeed the rest of African nations. The truth must be told, colonialism was a nightmarish experience that beggared the continent development and progress.

You've sponsored bills, moved motions that could take a federal lawmaker 2 tenures to move - National TV anchor tells Nwoko

A Channels Television anchor, Seun Okinbaloye, has thumbed up for Senator Ned Nwoko representing Delta North in the national assembly.

Okinbaloye, reputed for his critical stance against interviewees, commended Senator Nwoko over the number of bills and motions he has moved within the one year and four months he has been at the national assembly.

Specifically, Okinbaloye told Senator Nwoko that he has a long list of bills and motions he has moved within the short period he has been in the senate.

According to him: "Some of the motions and bills you have moved on the floor of the Senate is what a federal lawmaker would spend a tenure or two to move, but you have done that in far less than two years."

Okinbaloye made the remark during a live television session with Senator Nwoko after participating in the screening of newly appointed ministers at the national assembly.

In the session, the television anchor man drew the attention of the senator to a particular bill which he has brought to the senate for consideration.

The bill sponsored by Senator Nwoko is aimed at renaming the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development to National Social Security Agency.

Senator Nwoko revealed that the agency he is proposing to replace the ministry is to make the ministry to be more data driven where data of all Nigerians irrespective of socio-economic and political status will be collected for proper planning and documentation.

He said: "We need to have data of everyone from the units to the ward, from the local government to the state. There should be data base for everybody in Nigeria."

He said what he is advocating for has never been done before in Nigeria. He said the objective is to identify those in need from all the communities in the nation. He noted that the ministry of humanitarian affairs has been given so much budget but the funds are not reaching the people they were meant to serve.

He said the previous stakeholders in the ministry employ means that do not connect the expected beneficiaries to the agency, hence the funds get to the wrong hands.

Arising from this, he said the agency he is proposing is to have a national data base which will capture everyone irrespective of the individual's socio-economic and political status.

"It's about capturing every individual in Nigeria - civil servants, self employed, the sick, students, the deformed and the vulnerable, the rich, the poor and all classes of people. Nigeria needs to work with verifiable information.

"We should target the disables and the vulnerables. We must look at people who are really in need. They are many in Nigeria. This ministry has not done that.

"The ministry has been using consultants to help them compile names and N100bn is made available to them. They decide who should be given the money. Maybe to their families and friends and those who supported them. But not to those who need the money.

"With this data, we can plan Nigeria. We can plan for the vulnerable. Before releasing money to the ministry, let's fix this first," Senator Nwoko insisted.
