Readers & Friends,
Tomorrow, I will be so proud to share Bruce's story as part of the Westerleigh Park Tree lighting. It is my first opportunity to read the story aloud in years and to do it as part of a celebration of our beloved neighborhood is more meaningful than I can say.
The story of Bruce the Spruce is, at its heart, a celebration of our celebrations, the memories we make, and the impact even wordless, inanimate companions can have just by virtue of their mere presence and light. Mainly, it is a monument to family.
Populating its pages are illustrations of myself and my loved ones, a choice which started out as a fun idea but in years since has infused the project with a deeper meaning and a more urgent mission. It has imbued me, the steward of its fate, with the knowledge that so long as Bruce's story exists so, too, will my loved ones rendered therein.
At the back of the book, sits my bio. And toward the end of the short paragraph is a tribute to my niece and nephew as well as, "a neurotic weiner dog called Jack." A line that has made it into every bio of my professional life. That's because for 17 and a half years, I was blessed with the most loyal, loving, funny, challenging, noble, and yes, neurotic companion a girl could dream up. Jack was a wire-haired, Yoda-eared, otter paw-footed dachschund-terrier mix (or as I liked to call him, a purebred Nubbins) with a kind disposition and a wild playfulness. He was a beloved member of our family and our love affair with him was instantaneous and infinite. This week, after nearly two decades of loving companionship, our family had to say goodbye our dear little friend.
So if you join us in Westerleigh Park tomorrow (Saturday, December 6) at 3 PM. I am dedicating this most special reading to my darling, Jack. Our wordless, but not at all inanimate companion who shared his light with us for so many wonderful years. Whose presence illuminated our home with a spirit of comfort, fun, and insistent love. Who taught us all so much, with whom we share so many priceless memories, and whose name will live forever as part of Bruce's story and its mission.
With so much love,
A.A. Cristi
