Transitions and reflections always go hand in hand for me. Something I don’t talk about very often on here is that I worked as an SLP for 8+ years at Perkins School for the Blind, and a few more in private practice before/while taking the leap into full-time entrepreneurship.

Every stage has taught me something, but my time as an SLP at Perkins really influenced who I am, both professionally and personally.

Your first job teaches you more than you think… and it ends up shaping so much of what comes next. I hold that chapter near and dear to my heart and it will always be a huge part of who I am. 🫶🏼💐

International Women’s Day felt like the perfect time to share my first brand gifting moment (!!!) from 🥹. This female-founded brand makes “better for you” snacks, and I’m not sure if I was more excited about the taste or their branding 😍

Naturally, I had to make some blooms inspired by their fun color palette. 🌸

I hope everyone enjoyed that extra daylight today!!!

Flower School: Travel Edition reporting from my cousin’s bathroom with flowers and my makeshift flower studio à la mini weekender, kitchen scissors, tape, a vase, and two water glasses.

The following four bunches of TJ’s flowers yielded one medium and two small centerpieces:

💐 1 bunch of 20 tulips
💐 1 bunch of 5 wax flower stems
💐 1 bunch of 7 stock stems
💐 1 bunch of 5 bay leaf stems

The wax flower can be cut into many smaller pieces and works perfectly as a filler. The bay leaf stems were also long enough to cut into multiple pieces for greenery.

Pro tip: taping a grid with scotch tape across the top of your vase helps provide structure and keeps the stems in place.

Another tip: designing closer to eye level always helps. I used a suitcase 😅 but books, a bucket, or even a small trash can can work too!

Proof you don’t need a fancy studio to make something beautiful. Stay tuned for my next class.

Welcome to Flower School ✂️🌸. Hi, I’m Colleen!!! I’m a self-taught florist sharing the things I wish I knew sooner. Tips, tricks, and everything in between 😏

First up: processing your flowers.
Cleaning your stems is the most important step you’re probably skipping.

Before you design with flowers, you need to remove any extra leaves so nothing sits below the water line. Dirty water shortens the life of your flowers fast.

Always cut stems at an angle for better water absorption, and let your flowers hydrate before arranging.

This one step makes a huge difference in how long your floral designs last.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day from my Irish crew! 🧡🇮🇪☘️ and I had planned to escape the madness, but we ended up being home this weekend and just embraced it. We threw an impromptu gathering and watched the parade from afar via the window of our house. I was crying laughing on more than one occasion due to the folks who had a bit too much “juice” 😂 and now I’m curled up on the couch watching 60 Minutes and couldn’t be more excited about it 🙌🏻 👵🏻 @ South Boston
