I asked Google: What percentage of metaphysical stores close within the first year of opening?
Around 20% to 22% of new small retail businesses fail in their first year, and this holds true for brick-and-mortar metaphysical stores. However, because metaphysical shops rely heavily on niche markets, they often face a slightly higher closure rate—closer to 25% to 30%--within the first 24 months with even fewer surviving the five year mark.
Several factors make the first year for a physical or metaphysical shop especially challenging:
• High Overhead Costs: Industry analysis shows that running a spiritual store requires a substantial initial investment, with fixed operating expenses.
• Intense E-Commerce Competition: With the ease of buying crystals, candles and tarot decks online, physical stores struggle if they rely on impulse buys.
• Location Dependency: Brick-and-mortar shops outside of large, culturally diverse cities tend to struggle significantly more with foot traffic and revenue generation.
Successful operators combat early closures by diversifying revenue streams, such as hosting in-store workshops, offering intuitive readings and selling custom blended products that cannot be easily replicated by mass retailers.

The history of Serendipity Corner, LLC
2016 Mid year…a casual conversation among three coworkers sharing a desire to open a metaphysical shop.
2016 July 4, one of those coworkers (me) meets to view a very small available retail space in Michigan Center, Michigan. Numbers are crunched, a lease is signed.
2016 September 17th Grand Opening
2017 September Store closes.
2017 November 1, Store reopens in another very small space at 127 E. Main Street, Mt. Sterling, Kentucky.
2018 Store moves to the other end of the building to a much larger, 3 unit space at 119 E. Main Street, Mt. Sterling, Kentucky.
2019 October The store relocates again, downsizing to another small, single unit, down the street to 420 E. Main Street, Suite F, Mt. Sterling, Kentucky.
2021-2024 The store expands two more times into Suite E and then into Suite G, adding a group room and a Himalayan Salt Meditation Room. Our shop spirit Bettie and our Foodie Ghost do not disappoint.
2024 August 2, Upon returning from an annual trip to Lily Dale, NY’s Gated Spiritualist Community, it is discovered that the building has a RAT infestation. Volunteers, Customers and Friends rally, organize, sanitize, pack and move all items that can be saved to a storage unit in Farmers, Kentucky.
2024 September 1, a lease is signed and office space with group room privileges becomes the new incarnation of Serendipity Corner, LLC at historic (and a little bit haunted) 29 N. Maysville, Mt. Sterling, Kentucky.
2025 August 31, Serendipity Corner’s future is uncertain and space in Mt. Sterling is vacated.
