SHIRK'S STORE
The origins of Shirk's Store can be traced to 1887. Charles H. Orwig and his brother, Rev. P.S. Orwig, leased a portion of land belonging to Henry Ruhl on which they erected the store.
Charles subsequently became the sole proprietor.
By 1899 the store was operated by Oscar F. Bowersox.
Bowersox and J. George Royer operated the store jointly for a period of time.
Bowersox retained ownership of the building.
Royer's new business partner was Henry Mitchell, who later became the sole proprietor.
In 1918 Mitchell sold the business to Newton Shirk, who had been employed here since 1908.
Newt operated the business until his retirement in 1962 when his son and daughter-in-law, Donald and Delphia, became owners.
Donald died in 1991, and since that time Delphia has operated the store.
During Millmont's 132-year history, the village has been home to six general merchandise stores.
Only Shirk's Store remains.
And is Owned by Lewis Ray & Amy Hoover from 2021 to present.
Lewis is founder of LRH Enterprises Inc.
