Edit...wait, no, my math is terrible. Something not right in my backwards timeline. Branch should date to about 1860 not 1840. So, maybe a very little branch at the time of the Civil War Battle. Need more coffee...

Some more pics of the slice from a branch of the Lewisburg WV White Oak Witness Tree. Some of the growth rings are incredibly small, especially in the outer part/sapwood.

Two different series of pictures. One of the ring count and approximate tree life timeline that I did. The second is a series of closeups of about 2" intervals on one radius.

When I did my counts, I did it on 5 different radius of the piece. 4 of them were 155-160 rings/years, the other was 165. The hardest count is in the sapwood where the rings are tiny. Zoom in and try to find "lines" of "bubbles" or open pore looking things...those are half of a year growth. Selecting the open pored is a thin solid ribbon of wood. Combination of those two equals one growth ring.

Anyway, I think this piece of limb dates back to around the 1840s. And, for sure, it was alive to see the Civil War Battle of Lewisburg WV!

What would you do with this crazy bunch of Black Locust irregular pieces? Milled 9/4 thick.

Room-size jigsaw puzzle?
Whole bunch of unique charcuterie?
Floor with epoxy fill?
Decorative wall art?
Garden path "pavers"?
What other ideas do you have?

I used a magnifying glass and am still not 100% confident.
Let me know what you get. First answer to exactly match mine...gets a similar piece from this same tree.
Hint...this is slice from a branch of a 250 year old White Oak...the Lewisburg WV White Oak Witness Tree.
Hint #2...I counted four times on four different radials of the piece...and got four different answers. My "answer" is the average of those four counts.

Folks often ask me...what is my favorite wood? Right now...it is this!
Lewisburg WV White Oak Witness Tree...250 years old...stunningly beautiful.

Please try to ignore the clumsy camera work and focus on the wood. This is what 250 years of growth and environmental stress does to wood.

Many people think of Oak, even White Oak, as mostly plain and dull wood. I generally agree except for quartersawn and tight crotches with nice feather. Old White Oak is the exception. The only other Oak that I have seen like this is Virginia Live Oak.

Anyway...first rough finishing of pieces from this historic Tree. The wood is not completely dry yet, but I just couldn't wait.

Just think what some of those 6' wide planks are going to look like!

Black Locust irregulars. Who is up for a natural wood jigsaw puzzle? Around 50 pieces that came from 16 or so slices that mostly broke into 3-4 chunks while milling.

I thought the trunk would get more solid as I got closer to the ground. It did not. Not what I had hoped for...30" or so irregular slices/cookies/rounds. But, not a total loss...there are a lot of really cool smaller ones that will finish into really unique pieces.

These are headed to the drying rack and should be ready for finishing in about 2 years. If you dont want to wait...I have hundreds of others already dry and available.

What are your ideas on how these pieces can be finished and used?

In today's category of things that probably irritate me more than they should...glove liners that come loose...nearly always before the glove itself is worn out. Starts with one little tip in one finger hole and soon...a tangled mess that makes it "difficult" to get the glove on.
So, today, got irritated by this one and ripped the remainder out.
I feel better...victorious over a silly little cloth glove liner :)
