The Timeless Art of Attars:
In the historic town of Kannauj—often called the “Perfume Capital of India”—a centuries-old craft continues to breathe life into the world of natural perfumery. Among the brands preserving this legacy is Boond Fragrances, a label dedicated to reviving the art of traditional attar-making while supporting local artisans.
What are Attars?
Attars are natural, alcohol-free perfume oils distilled from botanical ingredients such as flowers, herbs, spices, and woods. Unlike modern synthetic perfumes, attars are deeply rooted in tradition and are known for their purity, longevity, and intimate scent projection. They are typically applied directly to the skin, where they evolve uniquely with body heat. The attar can be layered with your creams or moisturizers. (I prefer simple coconut oil).
The Legacy of Kannauj:
For over a thousand years, Kannauj has been at the heart of India’s fragrance heritage. The town’s perfumers have mastered the intricate process of hydro-distillation, creating scents that capture everything from blooming jasmine to rain-soaked earth. This rich tradition continues to define authentic attar production today. The technique is called deg-bhapka- a slow distillation method using copper vessels that has remained largely unchanged for centuries. This process produces fragrances that are not only natural and alcohol-free but also deeply nuanced and long-lasting.
I have a very small batch that my parents brought back for SVN. DM to order. (Scents include Rose, Jasmine and a limited edition attar, Satparni- a uniquely warm and sweet scent made of these beautiful florals that only grow during the winter nights in India).
