🌿How to dye bones using foraged black walnuts🌿
Black walnuts are abundant in the Midwest, especially here in Madison, WI….Literally most people around here will beg you to take them off of their lawns, and I will happily do so. Not only are they a delicious wild food, their hulls are amazing for dyeing fabrics.…and bones!
This was a super fun project and the second time I’ve dyed bones using black walnuts, but the first time dyeing on an open flame, and now the last time I will EVER dye bones indoors. Not smelling the bones boiling in my house was a game changer.
I was beyond happy with the results this time around, and surprised to find out that despite the hulls and nuts going through a full winter outside, they still produced incredible color. I just love variation in each bone and can’t wait to use these in upcoming jewelry and art projects.
