Did you know that Journey of the Freckled Indian — Culture Story’s first children’s book — is carried in the gift shop at the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, D.C.? 🧡

Over 60% of Native youth identify as mixed-race. This story was created for them — and for anyone who has ever struggled to reconcile different parts of their identity.

The freckles in the book are a symbol: we are a sum of many parts. And every part — every culture, every heritage — deserves to be seen, honored, and embraced.

This story isn’t just about being proud of your Native heritage — it’s about embracing all aspects of who you are (and your cultural heritage) and encouraging cross-cultural understanding with the people around you.

It’s a reminder that identity can be complex and beautiful — and that open, respectful dialogue can help us better understand both ourselves and each other. That way we can all be more confident when answering the question either internally or out loud if “who are you?”

💫 A full companion curriculum — including a video, digital workshop, printable PDF, booklet, and accompanying workbook — is available through Culture Story for schools, families, and individuals. Visit [culturestory.co] or DM for more info.

Reading Journey of the Freckled Indian to kids never gets old. This story celebrates the beauty of being proud of all parts of who you are—especially when your heritage isn’t always reflected back to you. It’s also about claiming your Native identity and knowing you belong if that’s part of your .

I wrote this children’s book to help young readers—and the kid within all of us—feel proud of their mixed heritage and cultural roots. Stories like this, created by Native authors and grounded in lived experience, are part of a growing movement to make sure Indigenous voices are heard and seen in children’s literature.

I’m now working on two new picture books with Bloomsbury Publishing. One centers on land acknowledgment and how we honor the original stewards of the places we live. The other explores the power of our regalia, with a focus on the Tlingit bracelet and the strength it symbolizes in our culture.

Representation matters. Our stories matter. And I’m honored to keep telling them.

Grateful to Chris Halter, Executive Director of St. Bonaventure Indian Mission and School, for supporting Culture Story and amplifying Native voices.

We first met when I interviewed him about his work bringing fresh drinking water to Navajo families for NBC News. His dedication to positive change truly inspired me, and I’m honored to continue collaborating.

Looking forward to our partnership and the growth of Culture Story with Chris’s support! I encourage others to consider matching St. Bonaventure’s commitment to Culture Story. Your support helps us continue sharing the beauty, vitality, and relevance of Indigenous culture and stories.

Let’s keep building momentum together.

Gunalcheesh (thank you) and congratulations to the team at Thompson PR for a wonderful event ✨ You all are an absolute dream team that brought all of this together 🤗

The conversations and camaraderie with the journalists was so wonderful as we talked about our shared admiration for Alaska.

Sharing the magnificence of Alaska Native cultures from the Culture Story lens 👓 was a treasured experience.

With the platforms each journalist has we hopefully 🤞 will have more coverage about the beauty and vitality of Alaska Native cultures, and how tourists can experience our lands through our cultural perspectives.

This was the first of many years in which Travel Alaska will feature Alaska Native culture at press events like this and in its overall marketing.

There’s an investment in the cultural tourism committee and a strong desire for there to be more efforts and engagement to showcase that all of Alaska is Native land.

The latest Travel Alaska collaboration reel dropped on Twitter today. It’ll go up on Facebook and Instagram soon.

It features Sealaska Heritage Institute’s Celebration from the perspective of Alyssa London — highlighting regalia, song/dance and the sense of community from coming together at this event and planning for it for years.

A Culture Story conversation covers topics around food/ subsistence, values/faith, family/community, fashion/regalia and the arts— those were some of the topics we covered in this Travel Alaska Facebook live at the Alaska Native Heritage Center.

Thank you to both Marge and Monica for engaging in this conversation and sharing about their Inupiaq and Yupik cultures.
