The Legend of the White Buffalo Calf Woman is one of the most sacred stories of the Lakota (Sioux) people, passed down through generations for nearly 2,000 years. It teaches the importance of prayer, peace, balance, and respect for all life upon Mother Earth. The story reminds people that true strength comes through spirituality, harmony, and unity with the Creator.

According to Lakota tradition, the People had lost their connection to the Creator. In response, the sacred White Buffalo Calf Woman appeared carrying a holy pipe and teachings meant to restore spiritual balance. She taught the Lakota the seven sacred ceremonies, including purification, healing, marriage, vision quests, and prayers for the well-being of all people.

Before leaving, White Buffalo Calf Woman promised she would one day return when the world needed healing and harmony once again. As she departed, she transformed into buffalo of four different colors—black, yellow, red, and finally white—symbolizing the four races of humanity and the four sacred directions.

To many Native people, the birth or appearance of a white buffalo is still seen today as a powerful spiritual sign of hope, renewal, peace, and fulfilled prophecy in troubled times.

"The villains are fairly obvious in “Flower Moon,” but Scorsese asks audiences to take a wider look at systemic racism, historical injustice and the corruptive influence of power and money, intriguingly tying together our past and present." ~ Brian Truitt,
"Gladstone, in the rare Scorsese film that gives center stage to a female character, is the emotional core here, and it's her face that stays etched in our memory."
~ Jocelyn Noveck
“This is for every little Rez kid, every little urban kid, every little Native kid out there who has a dream and is seeing themselves represented in our stories told by ourselves, in our own words..." ~ Lily Gladstone
