Last night’s celebration looked a little different than my usual dinner parties. There were no elaborate place settings, no carefully curated menu cards and not nearly as many details as I normally love to fuss over. But it was absolutely perfect for my daddy’s 80th birthday.

Of course, I still had to make a few paper pretties and arrange some flowers…because is it even a party without them?

What made this gathering special wasn’t the tablescape. It was the people. Old friends catching up, stories being retold, laughter filling the room, good food, good music and memories both old and new being shared around every table.

As much as I love the details, nights like these remind me that the most beautiful part of any gathering is the people you gather around. And celebrating my daddy? Well, that’s always worth the party. ❤️

A few years ago, my Aunt Jo Ann showed up with a huge bucket of zinnias and a handmade card, leaving them under my carport with instructions to save the seeds and plant them again the next year.

Last September, after we said goodbye to her, one of her daughters stopped by with a packet of her zinnia seeds, this vase and a sweet card.

This afternoon, I filled that vase with bright, cheerful blooms grown from those seeds and I couldn’t help but think of Aunt Jo Ann. It brought such joy and such a big smile. What a gift it is that some people leave behind more than memories. They leave little pieces of themselves that keep blooming year after year.

And really, how can you not smile when you see a vase full of zinnias? Wishing you all a bright and cheerful weekend ahead.

On Memorial Day the flags wave a little softer and our hearts remember a little deeper. Grateful for those who served, those we lost and the freedoms we often take for granted.

I was named after my Nanny, Abbie Nickens — my great grandmother. I never had the chance to know her myself, but I grew up hearing stories about her. A little fiery, a little feisty, full of personality…the kind of woman people remembered long after she left the room. I’ve always loved that part of our family story.

These old Franciscan Desert Rose dishes were hers, and every time I pull them out, I think about the hands that once set a table with them long before me. Isn’t it something how pieces like this carry more than meals? They carry memories, legacy, stories and love from one generation to the next.

I like to think maybe I inherited a little bit of her spirit along with her name. What a sweet thing it is to keep using something that once belonged to her — gathering people around a table she would’ve probably loved sitting at too.

If you know me, you know I’m a faithful gym goer, there every Monday through Friday unless I’m out of town or truly under the weather. But the last two mornings, I’ve had to miss it and instead, I’ve been walking.

No headphones, no music, no podcast, no walking buddy - just me, the fresh cool air, the sound of birds waking up and nature coming alive all around me.

There’s something about that kind of quiet that feels like its own kind of therapy. I noticed things I probably would’ve missed otherwise—the soft smell of jasmine, the sun rising over the lake, the fog slowly lifting as the light broke through. I prayed for friends who are hurting. I admired beautiful homes. I noticed fresh growth in people’s yards.

It was simple. It was still. It was really, really good and I’m thankful for it.

There’s something extra special about seeing a little piece of your work tucked into a day this meaningful.

This circular menu sat at each place setting, featuring a custom crest I had the honor of designing for the sweetest bride, Anna Cathryn—someone I’ve known and loved for so many years. Getting to be a small part of such a beautiful celebration made it all the more meaningful.

The day was absolutely stunning, every detail so thoughtfully done and full of so much joy. Wishing Anna Cathryn and Latt a lifetime of love, laughter and the kind of marriage that only grows sweeter with time.

There’s just something about Kentucky Derby day, the excitement, the tradition, the colors, the little bit of pageantry. The roses. Oh the red roses.

I’d love to be in attendance one year - for the big hats, pretty dresses and mint juleps, of course. Have you ever been? Are you picking a horse this year? I’d love to know 🌹🐎

Yesterday we celebrated two years of marriage. This morning I’m reminiscing as I’m looking through the amazing photos that took for us. The simplicity and sweetness of our wedding day will never be lost on me. A gorgeous day in the mountains, family by our side, flowers blooming all around, a laid back day of celebrating and dinner on the deck as the sun went down behind the mountains - the best day, our day.

It’s the little details for me. The place cards, the soft glow of candlelight, the way everything is set just so. Last night those details weren’t just about a pretty table, they were about love. Fifty years of it.

Behind every thoughtful touch was a family that shows up, that celebrates big, that loves deeply and steadily. The kind of love that doesn’t just fill a room, it fills a lifetime. As beautiful as the table was, it’s the people around it that made it unforgettable. Always has been, always will be.

After sharing a picture of a cake I made for my mama’s birthday, a sweet friend said, “Is there anything Abbie can’t do?” The answer is a wholehearted yes, yes and yes. There are plenty of things I can’t do. Like so many little moments, that comment got me thinking and here we are again.

Not too long ago, I had a conversation with a friend about people and how incredibly different we all are. Our strengths, our gifts, our “things” as I like to call them. If you know me at all, you know I say it often—we all have our thing and the older I get, the more I believe that with my whole heart. What’s mine isn’t yours and what’s yours isn’t mine. And while we might be able to do some of the same things, there’s a touch—a way of doing it, a way of giving it—that is uniquely ours.

And truthfully there’s so much freedom in that. Freedom from comparison. Freedom from feeling like we have to be good at everything. Someone else’s gift was never meant to take away from yours, it was meant to sit right alongside it.

Maybe your gift is encouragement.
Maybe it’s baking cakes.
Maybe it’s loving the hard-to-love.
Maybe it’s making people laugh when they need it most.

Whatever it is, it matters. Don’t shy away from it. Don’t downplay it. Don’t tuck it away like it’s ordinary. It’s not. God doesn’t create duplicates and that means your exact brand of beautiful - your way of showing up, serving others, loving people is needed.

We were never meant to do this life alone. We were created to bring our gifts to the table and to make room for others to bring theirs too. So bring them. Be thankful for them and don’t forget, what comes naturally to you might just be the very thing someone else needs most.
