🐳An estimated 100,000 marine mammals—including whales, turtles, dolphins, porpoises, seals, and sea lions—die each year due to plastic pollution. Ingested plastics can cause internal injuries, blockages, and malnutrition.
Specifically for whales, plastic ingestion is a growing concern. For instance, in 2019, researchers found that 60% of 88 stranded whales had ingested plastic. A study of s***m whales in the North Atlantic revealed that 83% had plastic debris in their stomachs.
Even trash that’s properly disposed of and destined for landfills can end up in the ocean due to wind, flooding, and poor waste management systems. This highlights how far-reaching the issue of plastic pollution is—and why urgent action is needed.
At Mahalo Soap, we believe it’s time to be the change. That’s why we’re committed to eliminating single-use plastics from our packaging.
