🇺🇸🌺 UpBeat Aloha Friday – Week #24
The Story Behind Hawaiʻi's Unique Flag
With Flag Day being celebrated this weekend, I thought it would be fun to share a little piece of Hawaiʻi history.
Did you know that Hawaiʻi is the only U.S. state whose flag includes the British Union Jack? 🇬🇧 The design reflects Hawaiʻi's unique history and relationships with both Great Britain and the United States during the time of King Kamehameha I in the early 1800s. The eight red, white, and blue stripes represent Hawaiʻi's eight main inhabited islands: Hawaiʻi, Maui, Kahoʻolawe, Lānaʻi, Molokaʻi, Oʻahu, Kauaʻi, and Niʻihau. 🌴
Because Hawaiʻi was once an independent kingdom, its flag tells a story unlike any other state flag in America—a reminder of the islands' rich and fascinating past.
Living here, I often see the Hawaiian flag flying alongside the U.S. flag, representing both Hawaiʻi's unique heritage and its place within the United States today. 🇺🇸🌺
❤️🤍💙 For this week's featured bag, I chose one that reflects those same patriotic colors. Made from upcycled red leather and accented with stars-and-stripes fabric, it reminds me of both Flag Day and the unique blend of cultures and history that make Hawaiʻi such a special place. You can see this bag in my Etsy store here: https://www.etsy.com/listing/4514333010
Wishing you a beautiful Aloha Friday and a wonderful Flag Day weekend ahead.
With aloha,
Carol
