☀️ UpBeat Aloha Friday – Week #22
Hawaiʻi’s “Liquid Sunshine”
One of the things people quickly discover about Hawaiʻi is that sunshine here doesn’t always mean cloudless skies. 🌦️ In fact, many locals lovingly call those quick sun showers "liquid sunshine"—warm rain falling while the sun is still shining overhead.

Living here in Kāneʻohe, I see it all the time. One moment the Koʻolau mountains are wrapped in misty rain clouds, and the next, sunshine breaks through with bright blue skies and rainbows stretching across the bay. 🌈

It's no surprise that Hawaiʻi is often called the Rainbow State and is considered by many to be the Rainbow Capital of the World. Our unique combination of sunshine, trade wind showers, ocean air, and mountain landscapes creates ideal conditions for rainbows throughout the year.

I think there’s something meaningful in that too—how beauty often appears in the middle of changing weather, passing storms, and unexpected moments.

☀️ This week’s featured bag is Lā Melemele (lah meh-leh-meh-leh) – “Yellow Sun” - a bright sunshine-yellow leather bag inspired by Hawaiʻi’s glowing skies after the rain. Paired with deep ocean-blue accents, it reminded me of sunshine breaking through the clouds over Kāneʻohe Bay after a little island “liquid sunshine.” 🌈🌊 You can see this bag here: https://www.etsy.com/listing/4509888734

Wishing you a beautiful Aloha Friday filled with a little sunshine of your own. 🌺

🌺 UpBeat Aloha Friday – Week #21
Memorial Day weekend in Hawaiʻi is marked in many different ways—from ceremonies at Punchbowl National Memorial Cemetery to the beautiful Lantern Floating Hawaiʻi event held each year at Ala Moana Beach Park, where thousands gather to honor and remember loved ones. 🌊🏮Inspired by the Japanese tradition of floating lanterns, the ceremony has become one of Hawaiʻi’s most meaningful Memorial Day weekend gatherings—bringing together people of many cultures, faiths, and backgrounds in remembrance, peace, and aloha.

Amid the beauty and reflection of this weekend, it’s also a time to quietly pause with gratitude for the many sacrifices made by service members and their families throughout the years. 🇺🇸

There’s something especially moving about seeing light reflected across the ocean at sunset here in Hawaiʻi. ✨

For this week’s featured bag, I chose a soft ocean-white leather crossbody lined with deep blue and white hibiscus fabric upcycled from a pre-loved Hawaiian shirt—colors that reminded me of twilight skies, ocean water, and the peaceful feeling of Hawaiʻi evenings by the sea. 🌺 You can see this bag here: https://www.etsy.com/listing/4504740404

Wishing you a beautiful Aloha Friday and a peaceful Memorial Day weekend ahead. 💙

🌲 UpBeat Aloha Friday – Week #20
The Tall “Sailing Ship Trees” of Hawaiʻi

One of the things I love about living in Kāneʻohe is seeing the tall Norfolk and Cook pines rising above the Koʻolau mountains and coastal areas. 🌿 Most people picture Hawaiʻi as nothing but palm trees and tropical jungle plants, so many visitors are surprised to see these towering pine trees growing throughout the islands.

Many people in Hawaiʻi grew up hearing that these trees were connected to the age of sailing ships because of their tall, remarkably straight trunks. ⛵

During Captain James Cook’s Pacific voyages in the late 1700s, sailors encountered these towering trees on the remote Norfolk Island in the South Pacific near Australia and believed they might be ideal for ship masts. Variations of the trees were later introduced throughout Hawaiʻi, where they eventually became part of the islands’ landscape.

Ironically, Hawaiʻi’s tropical climate caused many of them to grow too quickly, making the wood less suitable for heavy ship rigging than expected. But even if they never became famous sailing masts, they became something else entirely: part of Hawaiʻi’s iconic scenery. 🌴

This topic feels especially meaningful to me because I grew up in northern Idaho, where forests and the logging industry were a major part of life. Now living here in Kāneʻohe, those Norfolk pines are actually right in my own backyard, and I walk among them every day.

🌲⛵This week’s featured bag reflects that connection to forests, island life, and the sea—crafted from upcycled green leather, inspired by the colors of Hawaiʻi’s towering pines and coastal landscape. You can see this bag here: https://www.etsy.com/listing/4504665855

Wishing you a beautiful Aloha Friday and peaceful weekend ahead. 🌺

🌺 UpBeat Aloha Friday – Mother’s Day Edition – Week #19 🌺
This Mother’s Day weekend, I wanted to share the sweet woman who inspired the name “UpBeat Bags.” 💗

The name actually came from my mom, whose upbeat spirit and positive outlook on life always stood out to me. No matter what life brought her way, she always seemed to find the good in people and situations—and she carried that warmth with her everywhere she went.

That spirit stayed with me over the years and became part of what I hoped this little business would reflect: creating things with care, creativity, optimism, and aloha. 🌸

So, this Mother’s Day, I wanted to share a photo of the woman who inspired the name behind my shop… my sweet, upbeat Mama. 💐

I know Mother’s Day can bring many emotions for different people, but I hope this weekend brings moments of love, gratitude, beautiful memories, and connection.

Wishing all the mothers, grandmothers, aunties, daughters, and nurturing women out there a beautiful Mother’s Day weekend. 🌺

With aloha,
Carol 🌺

🌺 UpBeat Aloha Friday – Week #16
Every UpBeat Bag has a past life… and that’s what makes it one of a kind. This one began as an upcycled leather jacket and a vintage Hilo Hattie aloha shirt… now reimagined into something entirely new.

Living here in Hawaiʻi has taught me the value of using what we have — especially on islands where recycling isn’t always simple.

🌺 UpBeat Aloha Friday - Week #15
Did you know the Merrie Monarch Festival began in 1964 in Hilo, Hawaii? Today it’s the most prestigious hula competition in the world — celebrating the art, history, and storytelling of hula. Held each year in Hilo during the week after Easter, the festival was named after King David Kalākaua, known as the “Merrie Monarch,” who helped revive Hawaiian arts and traditions like hula during his reign.

Inspired by the vibrant florals, movement, and artistry we see throughout Merrie Monarch week, this week’s bag reflects bold island color and tropical beauty. 🌺 👜 Loko Lilia ʻĀkala

🌺 UpBeat Aloha Friday – Week #14
Did you know Easter traditions in Hawaiʻi date back to the early 1800s?

When early missionaries arrived in the islands, they brought with them celebrations like Easter, which gradually became part of life here in Hawaiʻi. Some of Hawaiʻi’s oldest churches, like Kawaiahaʻo Church (built in the 1800s), still hold Easter services today—connecting modern celebrations to over a century of history.

Today, that history lives on in a uniquely island way.

One of the most beautiful traditions is gathering for Easter sunrise services by the ocean — watching the light come up over the water as a new day begins. 🌅 There’s something about that soft morning light… the colors, the calm, and the feeling of renewal.

Inspired by those island mornings, this week’s bag reflects the vibrant florals and ocean blues we see all around us this time of year here in Hawaiʻi. 🌸💙

🌺 Kai Lani Pua (KAI LAH-nee POO-ah) “Heavenly Sea Flower” – Bag #126 - A joyful blend of tropical florals and ocean-inspired tones, handcrafted in Kāneʻohe using upcycled leather and vibrant island fabrics. Each piece is one-of-a-kind — rescued, reimagined, and made with aloha. You can see this bag in my Etsy shop here: https://www.etsy.com/listing/4479900390

Wishing you a beautiful and peaceful Aloha Friday and a joyful Easter weekend. 🌺🐣
