Factual Friday: A storage unit should be planned, not just packed.

It is easy for a storage unit to become a place where things get pushed in, stacked wherever they fit, and forgotten about.

Then six months later you need something from the back.

Now what?

You have to move chairs, boxes, furniture and bins just to figure out where you put it.

That is why we organize a storage unit much like we organize a room.

For this one, we put pallets underneath the belongings to keep them off the floor, grouped similar items together, labeled the bins, and left a pathway so the owners could actually move through the space and get to what they need.

Organization is not about making everything look perfect. It is about being able to use what you have.

And if you are paying for a storage unit every month, you should not have to empty it every time you need something from inside.

Need help tackling a storage unit, garage, downsizing project, or another space that has gotten overwhelming? Reach out to A Honu Space.

Mahalo, Kaunoa Senior Center.

On Saturday, I spoke at Home Sweet Home for Life with about 60 kūpuna, family members, and community partners in the room.

We talked about aging in place, home safety, downsizing, planning ahead, and the real-life decisions families often wait too long to have.

One of the strongest parts of the morning was Curt Kiriu’s presentation on home modifications and the cost of care here on Maui. Seeing the numbers for in-home care, assisted living, and nursing home care makes one thing very clear:

Planning ahead matters.

Aging in place is not just about wanting to stay home. It is about making sure the home still supports the person living in it. It is also about understanding what care may cost, what support is available, and what needs to be handled before there is an emergency.

A safer home does not always start with a major renovation. It can start with clearing pathways, reducing fall risks, organizing important paperwork, letting go of what is no longer being used, and having honest family conversations.

Mahalo to everyone who showed up, listened, asked questions, shared stories, and stopped by the book table.

A Honu Space helps families create safer, calmer, more usable spaces for the season of life they are in now.

Do not make your family go on a scavenger hunt during a crisis.

Important papers, passwords, contacts, insurance information, financial accounts, medical details, personal wishes, and instructions should not live only in someone’s head.

The A Honu Space Final Affairs File helps organize this information in one clear, accessible place so your family knows where to look when it matters most.

A little planning now can save your family stress, confusion, and difficult decisions later.

Ask me about creating your own A Honu Space Final Affairs File.

I will also be speaking tomorrow, Saturday, August 1, at Kaunoa Senior Services for Home Sweet Home for Life. Call (808) 270-7308, option 3, to check registration availability.

The little things are not little when they matter to someone.

A favorite sweatshirt had a broken zipper. What began with adding zipper pulls turned into finding a better solution and arranging to have the entire zipper replaced.

It may seem like a small repair, but the sweatshirt was familiar, comfortable, and worth saving. Taking care of these practical details helps someone feel heard, respected, and cared for.

A Honu Space provides dependable, non-medical support with the details that make daily life easier.

Signs that a kūpuna needs additional support can show up in the refrigerator.
Expired food, too many leftovers, duplicate groceries, or food that is no longer safe may indicate that someone is having difficulty keeping up with the practical details of daily life.
Kūpuna Concierge provides non-medical support that may include checking the refrigerator and pantry, grocery assistance, light organizing, errands, appointment coordination, resource calls, and updates for family members.
This support can be valuable for adult children living off-island and for local families balancing work, children, spouses, sports, clubs, and all the other responsibilities that can make it difficult to be there as often as they would like.
Having a dependable person on Maui who can notice concerns and follow through can provide valuable peace of mind.

I receive a steady stream of calls and texts from clients, families, and other professionals asking, “Belia, do you know someone who can help with this?”

And very often, I know a person for that.

Recently, a client had a beautiful silk rug that needed to be professionally cleaned and safely stored. This was not a job for an ordinary carpet cleaner. It needed someone who understood silk, proper handling, wrapping, protection, and long-term storage.

I contacted a trusted local professional, coordinated the pickup and cleaning, and made sure the rug was returned, properly wrapped, and safely placed in the storage unit.

Professional organizing goes far beyond bins and closets. It is also listening carefully, asking the right questions, connecting people with dependable resources, coordinating the details, and following through until the problem is actually solved.

My clients know I will be truthful about what I can handle, patient while we work through the options, and careful about who I recommend.

Need a resource and do not know where to begin? Call A Honu Space.

You never know who I know.

When two people decide to build a home together, the new chapter is exciting. The difficult part is deciding what will fit, what should stay, what can be donated, and how to move everything without creating unnecessary stress.

This couple had already completed the major transition from their individual homes into apartments at an independent living community. After getting married, the next step was combining two apartments into one shared space.

The move involved deciding what would fit, packing and labeling containers, moving furniture, coordinating storage and donations, protecting meaningful belongings, and making sure everything ended up where it belonged.

The love story is theirs. My role was to bring patience, organization, and follow-through to the move.

A Honu Space helps with combining households, downsizing, decluttering, packing, donations, storage coordination, and move support.

Clutter is not just taking up space in your home. It can take up your time, your energy, and your attention.

We keep things because they belonged to another season of our lives, because someone gave them to us, or because making the decision feels harder than leaving everything alone.

But when too much from the past fills the house, your home can start to feel heavy instead of supportive.

Your home should reflect how you are living right now.

Professional organizing is not about making your home perfect. It is about making room for the life you are actually living.

Need help decluttering, downsizing, sorting, or creating more usable space? Reach out to A Honu Space.

Apparently, writing a book is only half the job😭

The other half is reminding people it exists without turning your entire feed into one long book commercial.

If you’ve seen me mention these books but still aren’t quite sure what they’re about, this is the simplest way I can explain them:

Voices of Care includes my story about caregiving, hard family conversations, and how painful it can be to say what needs to be said.

Lanterns in the Dark includes my story about trying to find myself and asking, Who am I supposed to be?

Two very different stories. Both are part of me.
