One of the best parts of doing a VCAP project before/after plant sale season is getting to use larger size and a wider array of plants for
less money.

The Tappahannock project ended up being 250 sqft larger than estimated which was primarily due to the expansive patch of natives that popped up once liriope and poison ivy were removed.

The Side Marsh Project (as I’m calling it) also ended up using fewer plants because I was able to put larger sizes in the place of small plugs.

Some of the more unique/fun plants that were used included: Sneezew**d, Wild Quinine, Starry Rosinw**d, Sea Ox-Eye Daisy, Eastern Beardtongue, and Bushy Blue Stem.

Pictured: Sneezew**d patch for wet sunny area and second, taller Wild Quinine bloom.

Over the course of six grueling weeks, Don worked on a VCAP-funded residential project in Tappahannock. Through surprise w**d barrier layers, hidden concrete, drought, unexpected marsh changes, and confusing plant survival/failure, Don planted over 1,000 plants representing 30 different species of native plants! Over 1,500 feet of lawn/marsh had invasives removed, natives added, and wood chips spread to help minimize coastal-adjacent flooding and erosion.

Our dog Fern tore his CCL last Thursday morning. Unfortunately complications from consults/sedations, medications, and injury lead to a fatal side effect.

This was a sudden and frankly horrifying turn of events. He passed comfortably early this morning. He will be missed dearly.

Exciting Business Adjacent Update

We have rebranded our old nonprofit to Pollinator Pocket Parks, Inc and submitted our fundraising registration in the state of Virginia!

We've already got the 501(c)3 tax exempt status, but were trying to figure out the best way to execute our vision of expanding native plant adoption.

Our goals will be two-fold:

1. Raise money (through plant sales and direct giving) to buy overstock native plants from growers and give them away.

2. Purchase and/or obtain low-cost, marginal, and degraded land where we can easily seed and plant native plants. This portion of the project is very fluid and my involve obtaining land with the express purpose of donating it to local community groups to maintain or it may involve us holding the property as stewards in perpetuity.

We'd love recommendations for folks we can hire for logo design and general feedback!

A client recently sent us pictures of their front lawn converted to mulch and plant beds.

Plants were blooming and thriving. The best part?

Zero watering. None.

I do want to point out in one photo how different the growth of the Goldenrod is versus the Switchgrass. Many grass plants and plants in general will spend more energy on their roots in the first year. Others will grow vigorously above ground.

Let this planting be a reminder that planting in November-February is AWESOME.

If we’ve installed any plants for you, please send pictures of how they’re doing!

Things We've Learned This Season Part 1:

1. Common Milkw**d is the superior milkw**d for dry/rocky-sandy-clay soils.

2. Planting December-February, even after fixing some minor frost heaving, as achieved better results than planting in March/April with consistent watering.
