We get several calls in the winter concerning cold air coming in from direct-vent fireplaces. The illustration below from HeatnGlo demonstrates how convection air intake (in the bottom of the picture) heats up when the fireplace is running by circulating around the firebox. The warm air then flows out the top vents as convective heat. HOWEVER when the fireplace is off, the air coming from outside of house still flows into the heat box which is COLD! The same air intake happens, except this time it is cold air flowing out into your room. Often, keeping your pilot lit keeps the air warm enough that this does not happen. However when it is extremely cold, the best remedy is to use your fireplace! Adding a remote control with a thermostat feature will allow you to operate the fireplace periodically throughout the day and night to warm the firebox and stop it from cooling your home.
