I have been torn over the last couple days on if I was going to share our experiences this week, they have been the hardest yet since we started this endeavor. But the reason I started this page was to show people what it's like learning to start a ranch.
Let's start with the beginning of the week, my favorite Pygmy Goat gave birth to triplets, problem being is I got busy with other stuff and forgot to check on her mid-afternoon so by the time we got there for evening feeding it was too late and 2 out of the 3 beautiful kids had passed. Luckily Abby and the remaining buckling is doing well, so we do have that to he thankful for. I am kicking myself for not checking her, and now I am trying to convince Jeff to let me install servalence cameras in the goat barn.
Then Thursday, New Years eve and Jeff's birthday, we get out to the farm to do our normal morning feeding and chores and we noticed Betty, our Yorkshire that is going to be farrowing anyday, was starting to get large bruises under her skin. Then she went into labor, kinda. Needless to say Jeff and I had to manually pull 3 stillborn piglets over the course of the next few days. It was exhausting, more physically exhausting then I would have ever imagined, and mentally exhausting, after the third piglet she start frantically searching her nest for her babies and didn't understand why they weren't there. So then Betty got angry, at one point she came within inches of biting Jeff's face. She seems to be doing a little better today, so hopefully we don't lose her too.
Over the last week we have experienced the bad and ugly of this life and it was a bitter taste. Our muscles hurt and our hearts are broke, but we are out here today working on fencing and cleaning out pens as a family because you just have to keep moving forward. An we are closer because of it.
Also want to say I think we have the most amazing vet around! Ninnescah Vet, Dr. Keeler, has been answering all our questions and helping us every step of this journey and without them we would have been lost! Thank you!
