Cups for Y'all Feature: Gold 🏆⭐⚱️

Bold, celebratory, and all in. Representing team USA, 🇺🇸⚽ the host nation—and Houston at its heart—these artists present the grand finale in gold! Over 250 cups from 48 artists, “Cups for Y’all” closes today in a final toast to the country that built a studio ceramics movement on the belief that beautiful, handmade objects belong on every table.

Mat Wheeler () creates pottery that reinterprets traditional forms through abstraction, anthropomorphic language, and experimental soda-fired surfaces. He has mastered soda-fired ceramics, as if his kiln is not a tool but a collaborator. Mat is currently a visiting assistant professor at East Tennessee State University.

Harry Malesovas () is a sculptor and painter who creates anthropomorphic creatures representing his self-discovery through art therapy. His vessels become less about holding things and more about holding selves. He has participated in artist residencies at the Northern Clay Center and Anderson Ranch Art Center and has exhibited across the U.S. Harry currently lives and works in Minneapolis and continues to add to the visual Rolodex of creatures he creates.

HCCC resident artist alum Maxwell Mustardo () is known as a ceramics prodigy—his work deeply rooted in material experimentation. Max has developed his own proprietary glazes resulting in dynamic, evolving surfaces. He is currently the studio director at the Toshiko Takaezu Studio in Flemington, New Jersey.

Chase Gamblin () is a vessel maker guided by process and layering—his work moves between maximalism and quiet restraint. His vessels are often composed of assembled thrown elements animated by expressive slip application. Chase is an artist and educator currently serving as Lecturer of Ceramics at Indiana University and is an active member of National Council of Education on Ceramic Arts and ArtAxis.

Cups for Y'all Feature: Neon ⚡🎆⚠️🍧

Functional? Maybe. Lush and electric? Absolutely. Representing the Netherlands team, 🇳🇱⚽✨ where Delft blue may be the legacy, but today’s makers push into high-voltage color—acid brights, glowing glazes, and surfaces that hum with experimental energy.

Eva Conrad () is a ceramic artist whose practice bridges functional and sculptural vessels, shaped by her roots in Appalachia’s rich craft traditions. Now based in Queens, she explores bold color and pattern through a painterly, maximalist lens—constantly chasing new surfaces, forms, and ways of working.

Eric DePan () is a Houston native and master glass artist who maintains a glassblowing studio practice in Houston’s East End. He is also the founder of Houston House of Glass (), the production side of his studio, where he and his team create custom barware.

Born in Mexico and raised in the U.S., Southern California–based ceramic artist José Manuel Flores Nava () uses a combination of ceramic handbuilding techniques, slip-cast objects, and vividly colored surface treatments. He creates sculptural and functional work that reflect the resilience of the immigrant community. José holds a BFA and MFA from California State University, Fullerton, where he currently teaches.

Salvador Dominguez () was born in Zacatecas, Mexico, and grew up in Pomona, California. Like many first-generation immigrants, language is an important part of Salvador’s narrative. His craft practice reflects on identity and its place within contemporary American culture. Salvador currently lives and works in Chicago, Illinois.

“Cups for Y’all” closes this week on Saturday, June 6!

1. Eva Conrad, “Orange Hazy Grid Mug” $88
2. Eric DePan, “Geodesic Cocktail Glass” $90
3. José Flores Nava, “Yellow Nopal Cup” SOLD
4. Salvador Dominguez, “Vaso rosa y verde” $5000

Cups for Y'all Feature: Bold + Painterly ⚫🍎🌫️🐗⚪

This week is for the cup you buy because you can't stop looking at it. Representing team Germany, 🏆⚽🇩🇪 where Westerwald stoneware has been speaking in deep black and blue-grey for centuries—surfaces that reward those who look closely.

Felt+Fat () is a Philadelphia-based ceramics studio creating handmade porcelain tableware that is both minimalist and bold. Known for its proprietary clay bodies and custom glazes, the studio’s work is highly regarded and used by chefs and restaurants worldwide.

Steph Becker () is an illustrator, painter, and ceramic artist whose practice centers on making one-of-a-kind objects, often featuring adorable animals. Her work has been exhibited across the U.S., including at the Museum of Art and Design and the MoMA in New York. Steph currently lives and works in Kansas City, MO, making drawings and ceramics to support herself and her dachshund.

Los Angeles–based artist Zack Nathanson () works between pottery and sculpture, drawing heavily from modernist and brutalist architecture, as well as graphic and industrial design. His vessels often incorporate typography directly into the surface, challenging how and what is consumed—the cup is not just something you drink from.

Working under the studio name Knook Ceramics (), Asheville-based artist Diana Hoover creates wheel-thrown pieces that combine minimalist forms with bold, highly precise geometric patterns inspired by Bauhaus design.

“Cups for Y’all” is on view for one more week, until June 6!

1. Felt+Fat, “Mug and Saucer in Arctic” $85
2. Steph Becker, “Boar Mug” $65
3. Zack Nathanson, “IMO mug” $100
4. Diana Hoover, “Space Mug” $70 – Photo courtesy of the artist by Whitney Ott ()
