Last January Imagine with Melanie made a commitment to make Moppets: creatures made with mop heads. Recently I received a commission to make 3 gnomes, Trump, Houston Astros and an orange tabby cat. Trump and the Astros were easy, but the cat stumped even my imagination.

Creating Moppets involves preparing the strands and gluing them on one at a time. It is a tedious process, but one I enjoy and the results are beautiful. Orange tabbies have orange and yellow fur in a modifies tiger print. I had orange strands left from Trumps hair so I only needed yellow. I took apart a Dollar Tree mop and set it to boil in a vat of water. Next I mixed acrylic paints to get just the right yellow and added it to the boiling mess. The rest is completed just like Rit dye. After the strands were dry, I separated the 4 strands and cut them in 4 inch pieces and glued them along with the orange cat. Luckily a quilting friend gave me a fat quarter of perfect fabric.

This is a Santa gnome. The price is $45 plus and shipping fee. He measures 16" tall and stands alone on a 4" wooden base. The nose and hands are hand sculptured from fabric. This suit is made from our Santa's first suit. It is bright red with white trimming. The shoes are also hand sculptured.

Imagine with Melanie goes wild with cotton mop heads. Each hair of Santa's beard is glued on individually to hold securely. If his beard gets ruffled, just comb it with a wide tooth comb.

Santa came to town this weekend so I will be just a little busy. I will not be able to participate in craft shows so I am going to try something new. I will show each Moppet in my collection with a full description and price. Please share them on your page. Let's just just how far these Moppets can go.
