No empty nesters here. It’s feeding time at the blue heron rookery on North Boulevard. One parent stands guard while the other spitfeeds the hungry, growing chicks. The more mature juveniles perch on the edge of the nest contemplating their maiden flight, embraced by the giant protective emerald green Resurrection Fern-carpeted branches of the magnificent hundred year old live oaks. Some fledgling green herons made their first flights and can be seen foraging on the ground. This spectacular nature show is the upside of a hot, humid gulf coast summer. National Audubon Society
