Italian, made in the 1960s, and unlike most whippets of its kind. The majority are light and indifferently modeled. This one is extremely heavy and wonderfully executed, standing thirty-four inches at attention on a tasseled base.
The breed was developed in Great Britain and known through the 1800s as the poor man's racehorse. What the sculptor caught here is the temperament that made them companions instead of competitors, gentle and quietly calm.
