My tribe!! Coahuiltecan!!
Most people drive through South Texas without ever knowing they're crossing the homeland of one of the oldest cultures on earth. 🌵
The Coahuiltecan people lived in the harsh brush country of South Texas and northeastern Mexico for thousands of years before the first Spanish boot ever touched this soil. They were not one single tribe but a mosaic of small bands, each with their own language and traditions, surviving in a landscape that most people would consider unlivable. They hunted, gathered, fished, and left their stories on stone walls that still stand today.
When the Spanish missions arrived in the 1700s, the Coahuiltecan world was forever changed. Many were absorbed into mission life at places like San Antonio de Valero, the very building we now call the Alamo. Their descendants walk among us still. Did you know this?
