Dear friends,

This is it — our final week.

Starting today, everything in the store is deeply discounted as we prepare to close our doors and turn the page on nearly 16 years of stories, community, and shared love of books.

📚 FINAL WEEK DEALS

75% OFF all remaining inventory

90% OFF for Store Credit Members

No exclusions. No holding back. Once it’s gone, it’s gone for good.

We can’t begin to express how grateful we are for every conversation in the aisles, every recommendation shared, every child’s first book, and every longtime supporter who helped make this place what it was. This final week is our way of saying thank you — and giving you one last chance to take a piece of the store home with you.

If you’ve been meaning to stop in one more time…
If you’ve been sitting on store credit…
If you want to fill your shelves (or gift piles) at unbelievable prices…

Now is the moment.

🕰️ We’ll be here through our final day, but inventory is moving fast and quantities are limited.

From the bottom of our hearts — thank you for being part of our story.

With gratitude,
Dane & the Ferguson Books / Fergie’s Bookshops Team

After nearly 16 years, it’s time to say goodbye to Ferguson Books — and to what most recently became Fergie’s Bookshops.

This decision has been made with much prayer, reflection, and honest discernment. What began as a simple belief in the power of books and community grew into something far bigger than I ever imagined. Over the years, having 4 stores in 4 different cities across North Dakota, Ferguson Books became places of discovery, connection, generosity, and shared moments — from first books and lifelong favorites to bag sales, author visits, school partnerships, and countless conversations that mattered.

These stores existed because of people. Customers who showed up again and again. Families who made them part of their routines. Teachers, librarians, authors, nonprofits, and local partners who believed in what we were building. Staff members who poured heart, patience, and care into the work — often far beyond what the job required. And my family, who lived every high and low of this journey alongside me.

Our last day operating inside Daily’s Market will be January 30. We strongly encourage anyone holding gift cards, gift certificates, coupons, store credit, or membership credits to please use them by that date.

While this chapter is ending, I am grateful to share that it is not the end of independent bookselling in downtown Fargo. We are working closely with a new, locally owned bookstore opening later this year, advising a brand-new owner as they step into this industry — sharing both what I’ve learned and the mistakes I’ve made along the way. I wholeheartedly encourage our customers and the broader community to support this new store when it opens and to continue championing independent bookstores. Look for Overbooked coming this spring/summer!

Though the doors are closing, the impact of what we built together does not disappear. Ferguson Books was never just a business to me; it was a mission, a calling, and a season of life I will always carry with gratitude and pride.

Thank you for reading with us, growing with us, praying for us, and believing in the quiet power of books and community.
With sincere gratitude,
Dane

FARGO, N.D. (KVRR) – It is a short walk across Roberts Alley from the former location of Ferguson Books to the back door of Daily’s Market. But that tiny trek was actually a momentous decision to make for small business owner Dane Ferguson. Ferguson Books had only been in Roberts Alley for about...

This is it.

It’s been a long and short 15 years. Ferguson Books has been my life! Starting this business right out of college because I couldn’t find a job during the great recession, you might say bookselling picked me as much as I picked it.

Today is the last day we are officially open as Ferguson Books. Stop downtown Fargo–if you want, for nostalgia purposes. I thought I’d feel more than I actually do, but to be 100% honest, I’m just worn out. Worn from the deferred maintenance in my life (you should hear my brakes 😬). Worn from ‘re-defining success’ and staring at failure. Worn from the shame of my mistakes, business and otherwise. Worn from all the fights among our friends and community members–who’s right or wrong on this or that issue. Lastly, worn from the uphill battle of fighting both the ‘support small business’ and ‘downtown is cool and safe’. I wish it was easy to change minds and harden hearts–it’s not.

Some sobering thoughts…16% of people are reading a book currently, and only 2% of parents are reading books with their children. North Dakota has the LEAST amount of bookstores in the nation (Yes, Wyoming has more..) It’s funny to think that for a time, Ferguson Books had more stores in North Dakota than Barnes & Noble. A reminder that growth alone isn’t the measure of success—it’s time to rethink how we move forward.

BUT! We are called to focus on the POSITIVE, right? Fergie’s & Frenchie’s just opened and hopefully people find it as delicious and fun as we all do. Grateful for the opportunity to do what I love–serve the community with fun ideas and wonderful stories. To say I’m not nervous would be lying, but I’m cautiously optimistic our pivot into partnering with Daily’s Market will be a good one.

Fergie’s Bookshops is just a start of our new chapter in bookselling and community building, I hope. I have wonderful dreams and goals about what this could be. If good value, strong community, and great stories are important to you-we ask you to come over with us. Join us on this journey. If not, I understand. This could be my swan song as a bookseller, but I’m praying it’s not. Either way, I’m ready for what’s next.

-Dane
