🎱HOW TO CHOOSE A BILLIARD CUE AS A BEGINNER!
🎯 1. Cue Length
Standard length: 57–58 inches (145–147 cm).
This fits most adults.
If you’re under 5’5” (165 cm) or a young teen, consider a 48"–52" cue.
🏋️ 2. Cue Weight
Standard cue weight: 18–21 oz (510–595 g).
Lighter cue (18–19 oz) → easier for finesse, ball control, soft touch.
Heavier cue (20–21 oz) → helps with power shots, breaking, and stability.
👉 Beginners often do best with 19 oz, a balanced choice.
⚖️ 3. Cue Tip Size & Hardness
Tip size: Standard is 12–13 mm. Beginners should stick to 13 mm → more forgiveness on off-center hits.
Tip hardness:
Soft → more spin, but wears faster.
Medium → best for beginners (balance of spin & control).
Hard → less maintenance, more power, less spin.
🪵 4. Cue Material & Construction
Maple wood is the most common, durable, and affordable.
Fiberglass / graphite-coated cues resist warping, good for casual/beginners.
2-piece cue (joint in the middle) → easy to carry, standard for most players.
✋ 5. Wrap (Grip)
Irish linen → classic, good for sweaty hands.
Leather / synthetic leather → more grip and comfort.
No wrap (bare wood) → smoother, but can be slippery.
👉 For beginners, linen or leather wrap is best.
💰 6. Budget & Brand
Entry-level cues: $50–150.
Avoid super cheap $10–20 cues — they warp easily and have poor tips.
✅ 7. Try Before You Buy
If possible, test cues at a local billiard shop or club.
Focus on: comfort in hand, balance, and whether the cue feels too heavy/light.
📌 Beginner’s Safe Choice Recommendation:
58" two-piece maple cue, 19 oz, 13 mm medium tip, linen wrap.
Something in the $80–120 range from a reputable brand → durable, good learning tool.
