Back when discovering new music meant digging through vinyl, tapes, CDs, magazines, and local releases, Boo Yah was one of the spots helping keep hip-hop culture alive in El Paso. Whether you were hunting for the latest underground release, grabbing mixtapes, or just talking hip-hop, this place was part of the soundtrack of the city.

A true local favorite and a reminder of a time when record stores were gathering places for the culture.

On this day, June 17, 1997, Capone-N-Noreaga dropped their classic debut album The War Report.
Straight out of Queensbridge, CNN delivered a gritty street soundtrack packed with cinematic production, raw storytelling, and undeniable chemistry. With tracks like "T.O.N.Y. (Top of New York)," "L.A., L.A.," and "Closer," the album helped define the sound of late-'90s East Coast hip-hop.
Nearly three decades later, The War Report remains one of the most respected debut albums to come out of the Queensbridge legacy.

Born June 16, 1969, Lorenzo Patterson—better known as MC Ren—helped shape the sound of West Coast hip-hop as a core member of N.W.A.

While often considered one of the most underrated lyricists of his era, Ren’s sharp pen, street narratives, and commanding delivery played a major role in creating some of the most influential records in hip-hop history. From Straight Outta Compton to Efil4zaggin, his contributions helped define a generation and establish Compton as a cornerstone of hip-hop culture.
