Basket weaving has been an integral part of the Low Country’s history for over 300 years. The art, brought here by slaves who came from West Africa, was a traditional art form passed down from generation to generation. During the days of slavery, the baskets were sold by the slave owners for extra income and known to be in great demand. Today, we appreciate this art and the artisans who carry on the tradition on Edisto Island.

Robert Smalls Steals the USS Planter

On 13 May 1862, Robert Smalls, a slave who was pilot of the USS Planter, quietly took the ship from the Charleston SC wharf and past successive Confederate forts, saluting each installation as usual by blowing the steam whistle. As soon as the steamer was out of range of the last Confederate gun, Smalls hauled down the Confederate flag and hoisted a white one. Then he turned the Planter, which often carried cotton and other items to market from Edisto Island to Charleston, over to the USS Onward of the Union blockading force. Along with Smalls, the Planter carried 15 other slaves to freedom behind Union lines including seven crewmen, five women, and three children. In addition to the cargo of artillery and explosives, Smalls brought valuable intelligence, including word that the Confederates had abandoned defensive positions on the Stono River.

The Indian Mound, also known as the Spanish Mount, is a mysterious shell mound that dates back to 2,000 B.C. Over many years, the Native Americans created a shell ring and filled it mainly with oyster shells. The reason they did this remains a mystery that archaeologists find fascinating. The mound is located in Edisto Beach State Park at the end of the Spanish Mound Trail.

The Church Mrs. Hepzibah Jenkins Townsend Built

The Edisto Island Baptist Church was built in 1818 by the efforts of Hepzibah Jenkins Townsend, the wife of a local plantation owner (Bleak Hall Plantation – modern day Botany Bay Plantation). She and the slave, Bella, tirelessly raised funds for the church by baking and selling breads and cakes. The church sanctuary includes a second story gallery where many slaves worshipped. Hephzibah is buried in the church cemetery and is the only white person to be buried there.
