Taking action isn’t always easy, nor is starting a business. Doing business to take action… well, that's another level.
I started Evening Star Bazaar because I love fashion and thrifting, but I was frustrated by the 92+ million tons of textile waste produced annually. This led me to ponder: How can I develop a platform that supports small businesses and artisans while making a positive environmental impact?
I took a quick glance at the responses from a thrifting questionnaire I sent out (it's still open until April 11th, you can participate through the link at the end of the article). While the majority of people thrift in person, they do so because it is difficult to truly assess thrifting clothes online due to the size, quality, and trust of the seller.
Here are some anonymous quotes:
"The inability to try things on is frustrating as specific materials, brands, types of clothing vary in sizes so much. So having it modeled with real humans with their measurements is very useful and helps me make a better choice to purchase or not. Also, an easy ability to return an item if it doesn’t fit helps."
"I like it because I can find more options but I don’t like it because it’s hard to tell if it will fit right."
"Some items appear to be in good condition online but once it arrives it's completely worn."
"I have never online thrift shopped before because I would be nervous that the clothes don’t fit, or it would be a scam. I like going in person more like Goodwill, Savers, Hope Gospel etc."
This feedback underscores that online thrift shopping can work with the right platform and business approach. It can solve problems for those who are too busy to shop or do not enjoy shopping due to emotional reasons, and for people looking to purchase an entire outfit complete with jewelry and accessories! The only caveat - shoes are not part of the outfits since foot sizes vary significantly.
This idea is still taking shape, and I’m excited to explore its potential. I partner with secondhand thrift stores to work through their overstock, curating complete outfits that I pair with artisan-crafted jewelry. I then use an AI program to generate a human model displaying the outfits, which I sell during LIVE sessions on social media. This approach supports small business thrift stores and artisans who create jewelry and accessories.
I'm sharing my process here on LinkedIn and Facebook. If you're interested or know someone who might be, I invite you to follow or subscribe to my channels. Together, we can make a difference, one outfit at a time.
Simple first baby steps.
