A minor league catcher once tried to pick off a runner at third base by throwing a peeled potato at him, and the story only gets stranger from there. ⚾

Dave Bresnahan was a backup catcher for the Williamsport Bills, a Double A affiliate, in August 1987 when he decided to try something nobody had attempted in professional baseball. Before an inning, he carved a potato to roughly resemble a baseball and tucked it into his mitt. When a runner took his lead off third base, Bresnahan fired the potato wildly into left field, and as the runner jogged home thinking the real ball had gotten away, Bresnahan calmly tagged him out with the actual baseball he had hidden the whole time.

The umpires didn't find it nearly as funny as the crowd did. The runner was ruled safe on the grounds that Bresnahan's trick constituted an illegal fielding play, and the Cleveland Indians, the Bills' parent club, released him the very next day. Williamsport, however, leaned all the way into the moment, retiring his jersey number and hosting an annual "Bresnahan Potato Night" promotion that continues decades later, turning a career ending stunt into a permanent piece of minor league folklore. 🥔

He got fired for it within 24 hours, and somehow it's still the thing he's most remembered for, exactly the way he probably wanted it.

Only a handful of players in MLB history have put together multiple 40 HR, 30 SB seasons. Jeff Bagwell did it twice... as a first baseman.

Today we’d lose our minds if a first baseman hit 40 bombs and stole 30 bags once. Bagwell did it multiple times and somehow it feels like that part of his career gets overlooked whenever we talk about the greatest hitters of the 90s. 🐝🔥⚾

Dillon Dingler is putting together a historic season!!

Not since Johnny Bench in 1977 has an MLB catcher reached 22 doubles, 23 home runs, and 72 RBI by the end of July while catching at least half of his team’s games.

We don’t just have a great young catcher. We have one putting together a season that hasn’t been seen in nearly 50 years!!!
