Scioto Gardens

Scioto Gardens Great native and unusual plants in a natural garden-like setting. He believed the accelerated process was at the expense of long-term plant health.

Rooted in Experience - Scioto Gardens was founded in 1999 by Michael and Linda Johnson, Collectively, they hold degrees in Horticulture and Natural Resources, and have over 90 years experience in the nursery industry and business operations. They grew Scioto Gardens into a nursery that provides high-quality plants with an emphasis on native plants and natural soil. Their plant passion includes un

ique and useful imported species, provided they are not species that may invade or harm our local environment. Michael's work in every area of the green industry, from garden centers to landscaping to large wholesale nurseries, allowed him to notice the nursery industry as a whole had moved toward aggressive 'factory style' processes that finish plants quickly. His observations and their combined academic training led them to the current, more natural growing methods. In May 2019, Michael and Linda sold the nursery business to a team of partners who will carry on their legacy and allow them to enjoy a well-deserved retirement. The new group of owner-partners includes Christine Dilley, Mark Dilley, Amy Dutt, Denise Gualtiere, Penny McDowell, and Annette Wright. While there may be changes here and there, we are committed to producing high-quality plants that will awaken any landscape.

Three of our most popular plants for part shade are now available: Jacobโ€™s ladder, harebell, and bottlebrush buckeye! Stock up on these amazing pollinator plants this weekend and enjoy the Habitat Hoopla this Saturday, June 13th from 10am - 4pm to learn all about Ohioโ€™s habitats, wildlife, and how to bring more wildlife into your yards.

Jacobโ€™s ladder is an easy to grow woodland native wildflower with attractive foliage all season. Lovely blue flowers open in the spring, helping to feed some of the earlier-emerging pollinators like queen bumble bees. They are good rain garden plants that prefer moist, rich soil and some shade, though they can grow in almost full sun with adequate moisture.

Harebell is a small native wildflower that can handle dry or moist soil, full sun or part shade. In the winter they feature rosettes of round leaves, which are replaced in spring with narrow, wiry leaves and flower stems. This species can be found around the globe in the northern hemisphere, and also called the bluebells of Scotland.

Bottlebrush buckeye is a wide-spreading, multi-stemmed and thicketing shrub native to the Southeastern US. It is an excellent summer-flowering shrub for moderately shady areas in a landscape, sending up a profusion of foot-long panicles of white flowers. It is long-lived and slow to mature, but is definitely worth the wait. Partial shade and adequate moisture will help protect it from leaf scorch and help it hold its leaves longer than other buckeye species.

Shop now at sciotogardens.com for pickup or stop by Saturday, June 13 from 10am - 4pm during the Habitat Hoopla to shop for these species and a ton more from both Scioto Gardens AND Natives in Harmony!

A little about Marne: Marne provides a variety of educational programs, workshops, conferences, and publications centered on wildlife ecology and biology, habitat management for wildlife, and managing conflicts between humans and wildlife. She was fortunate to discover her passion for wildlife conservation and outreach education early in her career and now works to spark interest and love of nature in Ohioans of all ages. At home, she gets her inspiration from her own two little nature-enthusiasts, her daughters, Cora and Isla.

Join Marne Titchenell for an engaging look into the lives of Ohioโ€™s bats. Where do they live, and how do they spend their time? Learn about their unique ecology, the threats facing their populations, and what you can do to help protect Ohioโ€™s bats.

A little about Lizzy: โ€œIโ€™m a pollinator researcher at The Ohio State University, where I earned my bachelorโ€™s degree in wildlife science and entomology and my masterโ€™s degree in ecology and evolution. My work centers on bee and butterfly communities across Ohio, as well as the endangered Rusty Patched Bumble Bee in Central Appalachia. Behind all my conservation work is a passion for outreach and making science accessible to everyone!โ€

Lizzy will discuss native bees, how to identify them, AND attract them to your gardens. She will have pinned specimens for folks to look at, too!

When you visit us this weekend, be sure to wear good walking shoes and dress for the weather - which looks like it will be sunny and hot! Good skin and eye protection will be greatly appreciated since shade opportunities are limited to our shade arbors, sails, and porch until our trees grow a bit more over the next few years. ๐ŸŒž๐ŸŒณ

Christopher Kline is a plant guy by training, with a Forest Management degree from Northern Arizona University and a Masters in Plant Biology from Ohio University. Along the way his interest in bugs has grown, leading to developing and directing the Butterfly Ridge Butterfly Conservation Center in Rockbridge, Ohio, where he and his wife have converted 21 acres of fields and forests into butterfly-friendly habitats and have exploded the butterfly population in the process. As their butterfly population has increased by 300 percent, they have also documented well over 1000 moth species.

You can catch his talk about the best native plants (and others) to attract butterflies to the home landscape this Saturday, June 13th at the Second Annual Habitat Hoopla!
