Thereās something undeniably romantic about wanting to start a family with your partnerābut nothing says romantic like telling your partner youāre pregnant, approximately four months into your relationship. Here, I never wanted to have kidsābut that was becoming a reality I did not want to change. Each twist and turn has revealed a new slice of everyday life, an echo of my past self, or a view so beautiful it takes your breath away.
From growing up in rural Wise County, to the busy village of New York City lined with cafĆ©s, I choose the streets of Texas that invite me to slow down. Itās in these everyday momentsāwatching locals greet each other, hearing the courthouse bells ringing in the distance, or catching the scent of fresh air as you leave the city limits that let you begin to feel the true spirit of the country.
Wandering the streets is also a way of connecting with Decaturās layered past.
Youāre walking the same paths as poets, painters, emperors, and revolutionaries. Yet despite their age, these street remain aliveāmodern, dynamic, and filled with people living their lives in beautiful, open-air harmony. And I canāt wait to raise my future child(ren) here.
Where History and Daily Life Intertwine
In Decatur, history is never far away. Town streets echo with centuries of footsteps, and brick-colored buildings, lean in like old friends sharing secrets. Street corners often surprise you with historical markers, tucked-away churches, or local markets bustling with fresh produce and chatter. From ancient ruins to rebuilt County Seat bliss, the streets are layered with the past while teeming with the life of today.
The Sounds and Scents of Everyday Life
Each street has its own rhythm. In the morning, thereās the hum of espresso machines and the clatter of cafĆ© cups at Trinity Street Coffee. By afternoon, the air fills with the scent of lunch from nearby restaurants. Children play in parks while motorcycles zip past. Itās chaotic, intimate, and endlessly photogenic.
