One day, Ethan asked me if I wanted to/could use the iPad he'd used for a while. I asked him why he didn't want it, any more. He said, "It's kind of like a really, really large iPhone, but without the phone, so, there's that!"

This blind/v.i. tech is really fun to watch, if you haven't ever had an opportunity to see it in action. When Ethan gets through with his summer classes (college fall graduation, fingers crossed), I might be able to convince him to do an orientation and mobility (o & m) component that I'll post!

Kristy Viers is here to show the world how you use a phone when you cannot see.

Great article about audio visual support and description for people who are blind/low vision, hard of hearing/deaf, and deaf/blind.

My husband and I naturally did video description for for Ethan for years, and I've done a little live production description. One point the article makes is about what's really needed compared to what's dished out. I suppose learning about blindness and the description needed for *supporting the video when there's no dialog to drive a scene* came so gradually I just thought everyone in the industry would know how to do description well. Based on description I've listened to and read in script notes for movies, that disappointingly hasn't been my experience.

Let me know what your thoughts are about movies/shows with these features. Are you simply happy for even a few drops of trying, or do you think more communication could be made with people who actually want to use the services?

In the fractured world of on-demand TV, subtitles and audio description can become afterthoughts. But is change on the way?

Literacy equals empowerment!

Gracie Benedith-Cane created Braille Code Inc. to help her visually impaired son, Wani, dress himself independently in the morning. The company prints Braille patches for clothing to help blind and visually impaired people identify items by touch.

Raising our two sons, now in their early 20s, I grew into the firm belief that all children - not just kids who are b/vi - should have access to an IEP (individualized education plan/program). What I heard in this wonderful Mind Matters podcast, produced by my voiceover friend, Dave Morris, and his wife, Emily, is that a 504 can be used when a medical referral for an IEP is not possible. Now, during the summer break from school, you could address your children's needs, and develop a plan that could set your children up for greater possibilities in their advance school years. 💖

I hope you'll learn (and, reminisce) as much as I did, and I encourage you to listen to all of their Patreon podcasts, and support them!

Special education services can make a huge difference in the educational experience of a twice-exceptional child. On episode 32, author and education writer Amanda Morin joins us to discuss some of the services available and share best practices for parents and counselors to effectively advocate on....

You know what's said about assuming, right?!

You know what's said about assuming, right?!

Get this all the time. You don't look blind" is something I still hear from people far too often. Lots of people all over the world still believe this misconception that to be visually impaired you tend to look a certain way. They associate a certain look, an unresponsive stare, a vacant expression. But there are many shades of blindness, it's never all or nothing and it's impossible to judge how someone sees By just the way they look back. Even today adverts for sight loss charities and guide dogs always seem to use people with no vision who's eyes have "that look" that most associate with blindness. It keeps the misconceptions alive. It reinforces the barriers we have to overcome and stops people from reaching out for help with their vision loss because they feel that they're not blind enough yet. You don't have to be totally blind to use a cane or a guide dog and if you're like me you don't have to look a certain way to be visually impaired.

There’s a four-story mural being created in the Bishop Arts District in Dallas. The man working on it had to relearn how to be a visual artist after losing his sight.
