July 7, 2025, Torrential rains triggered catastrophic flash floods in Kerrville and surrounding areas over the July 4 weekend, claiming at least 82 lives across Central Texas, including 68 in Kerr County alone. Among the deceased are 28 children, according to The Guardian news.
The Guadalupe River surged over 26 feet in under 45 minutes, sweeping through neighborhoods, roads, and campsites. โSearch teams plodded through mud-laden riverbanks and flew aircraft over vast swaths of water, looking for dozens still missing,โ reported Reuters.
Tragedy struck Camp Mystic, a historic girlsโ summer camp near Hunt, where at least 27 campers and staff died, and 11 remain missing, including 10 girls and one counselor, according to The Wall Street Journal. Camp director Dick Eastland was among the victims, having reportedly died while trying to rescue campers.
More than 850 people were rescued using boats, helicopters, and drones, according to Reuters. President Trump has declared a federal disaster, pledging aid and resources for recovery.
Officials and community leaders have vowed to investigate possible delays in warnings and improve preparedness. โThis is one of the darkest moments in Hill Country history,โ Kerr County officials said in a public statement.
